Vanek's next contract

Vanek will sign for next year. Only not necessarily with the Habs. How much would you see Vanek signed for?

7.0M for 4-6 years looks fair to me.

I think he'll ask for around 7.5 though.

Worth about 6-7 IMO, but will probably get 7.5-8. I really don't think singing a high end free agent is worth the risk anymore of him declining or not fitting in with your system with the cap . The fact that he's already overpaid makes it that much worse if he declines or doesn't fit in. Also can think of more free agents who didn't work out then who did.

I'll bring up one comparable. Parise worth about 6-6.5 (which I still think is a strech, but most would agree is his value) got 7.5ish and has not played anywhere near a 7.5 player last year or this year and he's on the statistical decline of his career.

No question he gets 6.4 but the term is key. My guess is 7 X 7. I just dont see him lasting through that contract with all the injuries he has had.

Probably the correct answer. Anything for $6.5 million or less per year would be acceptable by me. $7 million per is pushing it and anything over that will anger me.

Enough that the team is going to regret is a few years down the road.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Vanek in Minnesota for a bit of a discount. 5 yrs, $6 mil per.

I'd be stunned if its anywhere but Minnesota. I think his wife's desire to be there is the main factor.

Think he will sign in Minnesota for a roughly similar deal with Parise and after that neither of them will reach 20 goals in a season again

I think he gets 7 years @ 7.5 a year. Maybe he takes slightly less like 7 for 7 for a team like Minnesota.

Why would he go for shorter term? 56 million is the minimum you are getting him for. I would be shocked if he signs for less than 50 million.

Big enough to make teams fans very pissed off after 2-4 seasons.

I'll bring up one comparable. Parise worth about 6-6.5 (which I still think is a strech, but most would agree is his value) got 7.5ish and has not played anywhere near a 7.5 player last year or this year and he's on the statistical decline of his career.
Parise's value is above Vaneks due to his elite PK and forechecking, as well as his defensive abilities. Speed is also better than Vanek's, which is a big deal as the players age. His work ethic is top notch, whereas Vanek's is MOR.

In other words, he plays a 200 foot game and is the antithesis of a floater, while Vanek has been characterized as a sniper only with limited use in other areas of the ice.

Personally, I'm hoping the Wild don't go beyond 30M, give or take. Don't care if it's 4 years at 30 or 6 years at 5.5. I don't want us to get stuck with a Heatley like contract where we have to pay 7.5 M per for a borderline NHL'er halfway through his contract period. While I don't think Vanek's decline will be so extreme, he does have a somewhat similar skillset.

IMO Vanek's value (6m at low end, 7.5 at high) will be determined by his performance with the Habs from here on out. If he's invisible, as he was during the Olympics, it will hurt him, as GM's will look at his age and go, " hmmm, do I want this guy on my roster in five years?". If he kills it and scores double digit goals in the playoffs then he will do himself a world of good.

Due to the higher taxes in Quebec, he still might choose MN at 6.5. Again, going back home with a good team and playing with buddies, as well as making wifey/family happy Will factor in. He's already made a lot of money, and is looking to settle down now.

Montreal's only chance to resign him is if they achieve huge success in the Playoffs and he gets carried away with the adulation that would accompany said success. In addition he and his wife would have to be charmed by life in Montreal, which is entirely possible. I would imagine that life in Montreal as a star of a WINNING Canadiens club wouldn't be the worst thing. At least you know that he won't be scared off by cold winters, as MN's and Montreal's are more or less interchangeable.

8.5-9, 7 year deal.

And I'll go with Philly.
