I can't disagree with something more than that. Habs want Gionta back. Talks have begun. Confirmed by Gionta's agent. Agent says that they will talk about the role he'll have and the money he'll get.

Makes no sense if you want to improve. No sense at all. I don,t want him back. If it happens, I would "live" with 1 year. 2 years and more would be bad. Anything more than 3 M$/per year would be pure and sheer stupidity.

Gionta will sign for 2yo at 3,5M$. We all know it deep inside.

Wouldn't be surprised. But will be really dissapointed. Stability is great....but there's a freakin limit.

Right off the bat, my reaction is NOOOO!!
We need to get better, not try to age gracefully with past their prime vets.. and we need to get bigger on the RW anyway, since Gallagher is here to stay.

I understand that our RW depth is lacking, since Vanek & Parros aren't returning it's basically this without Gionta:
Gallagher
Weise
Blunden

You could use Briere, whom you're stuck with for another year anyway, but Therrien didn't like using him much.. and he was better at center.

On the farm Andrighetto had a good year in Hamilton, he is the only current viable option really.. as Thomas underwhelmed & McCarron is still a ways away.
And is he ready, tough to count on him as you're only option going into next year.

On the free agent front, there isn't much there unless you're interested in overpaying for a Hemsky or Vrbata. So either there's a trade to be made for a decent RW out there, or the Habs hope they can re-sign Gio for 2 years in the 3M range.
By then you should know if Andrighetto is indeed a player, and McCarron will be that much closer.

So I "get it"... even if I don't like it.

I'd still like to see them explore the trade front, see if they can trade for that RW.
Gorges should be on the block, sign Weaver instead who is similar but will come cheaper and plays on the right side where we need the depth. Opens up the left side for Tinordi & Beaulieu.

On offense the question still remains whether it's time to move Galchenyuk to center. If so Plekanec can be moved, for better or worse.
But sending Galchenyuk to C means Bourque becomes your #2 LW, that's likely why they're in no rush to make the move.

Internally De la Rose would have to blow us all away at camp and make the team right off the bat to make me feel good about our LW again in that scenario.

On the UFA front Moulson would be my favorite option, but he's likely to get a few stupid offers July 1.. do we really want to go there.

Feels like a 1-2 years away from having the munitions to really revamp our roster a little... so if we HAVE to keep Gio, PLEASE let it be only a 1-2 yr deal, 1 preferable but not likely.

Gionta on a third line for cheap won't hurt you, but he doesn't belong on the second line.

So I am all up for Gionta being signed here, even though I bashed him, because he does not deserve that much ice time.

If the price is right, on a more defense role, I am all for it, though.

Can we please not have the smallest center in the NHL (Desharnais)
PLUS, the smallest right winger in the NHL (Gionta)
PLUS, the smallest d-man in the NHL (Bouillon)

You should get your wish with Bouillon... else I'll lose my mind.
Where there's the excuse that we don't have a better option at the moment in the case of RW's and Gionta.. we have nothing but options on D, no excuse whatsoever to bring Bouillon back.

There was a time when the Habs let Koivu walk when anything over $3 million/year was out of the question, and I submit we're at a similar junction when it comes to Gionta.

As long as he doesn't get ANY PP time next season and doesn't play big offensive minutes.

And it's cheap.

18-20 goals while playing shutdown quality minutes is great value for 3.5 million. Be prepared to be disappointed. I doubt we get him for 3.5 million

I'm fine with him back if Briere is gone, Gionta is fine in a third line defensive role at least and can still chip in with 15-20 goals... Briere just has no role on our roster right now.

5th in scoring for UFA RWs so not totally washed up but needs to be a 3rd line guy and no PP time

2 year $3MM and no NMC's otherwise would rather focus on improving the Top 6 and not limit the line combos for MT

Would also seriously considering re-assigning the C to one of our best players - like just about every other team in the NHL

But he's not going to score that many goals. And he's not the defensive wizart he uses to be.

Use the Gionta money and a tad more to sign Callahan. He can do what Gionta does but is younger, hits a ton and would be a great character guy.

This better be for less than 2.5M and 2 years max.

Habs have been trying to get bigger, faster, more physical and younger. Gionta is the opposite of these qualities.

If we're going to pay 3.5M$-4M$, I'd rather take a run at Setoguchi.
