What happens if Florida outtanks the Oilers?

So right now Florida is 1 point ahead of Edmonton with a game in hand. However, Florida is going on an impossible road trip while the Oilers have a few winnable games coming up. If the Oilers come ahead of Florida, which I think is likely, and assuming the lotto balls go in order, Florida would draft 2nd. Florida needs a defenseman, and since Buffalo will grab Reinhart Florida will be in position to take Ekblad. What do the Oilers do? Trade up or draft yet another forward?

Does Florida not need forwards as well?

Contrary to popular belief, the Oilers do need another Top 6 forward.

They also need a defenseman no doubt, but they won't decline a forward.

They need both, but Ekblad is by far the BPA at #2.

if you're a Panthers fan... what do you care what happens to the Oilers? they're still getting a high pick.

The #2-#5 spots are up for grabs and anything can happen. 4 points separating 4 teams isn't exactly a whole lot, especially with the ROW factor.

Because It'd be nice if the Oilers gave something of value up to Florida to move up.

If they draft another forward, that'd be just...wow.

Edmonton would be fine grabbing another centre and trading Gagner for a D. A rookie Ekblad isn't going to help EDM anymore than Nurse did last year.

In fact, I think Nurse was a mistake last year. Edmonton should have taken Horvat, Nichushkin or Wennberg. They could have grabbed a D like Hagg in the second and it would be better for them long term. I would never use a top 5 pick on a D if quality forwards are available. D take more years to develop and the bust factor on first round D is high. The number of quality D drafted past the first round is pretty good. Weber, Letang and Subban were not first round picks.

I think the Oilers will be okay drafting a forward at 3rd overall. Yeah they'd like Ekblad, but adding a good young player is never a bad thing, despite what the Oilers have done (or not done) with their young guns. They aren't scoring much (23rd in goals/game) and drafting like Bennett or MDC could allow them to move a more established talent to shore up their backend.

I say they'll pick William Nylander anyway; he'd really help round out their top 9 wingers.

If the Oilers pick behind the Panthers we'll gladly take a forward and trade players like Eberle and Gagner for a proven #2 dman and #4 dman respectively. The Oilers are just fine in the defence prospects department with Nurse coming up and Marincin and Klefbom on the cusp of becoming full time NHLers.

I would still take Nurse. He is exactly what we need. Potential #1.

And how many other top D were drafted on the top 15?
OEL, Doughty, Petro, Hedman, Phanuef, JBO

Only Nichuskin was in the picture for forwards. Horvat is a fine prospect but a reach at 9, I don't see him having more than a 2c ceiling, same for Wennberg.

The Oilers have 3-4 D prospects right around Hagg level, so no use adding another one.

Nurse has had an outstanding year in the OHL and looks to be the top pairing D we need.

Its suprising to hear people say the Oilers should have taken a forward, when all pre draft they were critized for not taking D in previous drafts. The best choices were the 3 D or Nischuskin, (or Monahan if he fell)

From a Canucks fan, any pick in the top 3 is highly enviable. Not a hard decision for EDM who needs size and a physical element in its top 6 as well as D.

You draft one of draisaitl or Bennett, and then trade one of Eberle or Yakupov for a stud defenseman.

In one swift movement you add size to the top 6, and get a horse on D. You'd think EDM GM would have figured that out by now...

Hall RNH Ebs
Perron Gags Yak
Hendri Gordo Nylander

These 9 would own the Pacific Div

He's years away from being a 1D, if he reaches it. Don't get me wrong. I like Nurse quite a bit. He's got an edge to his game I appreciate. I'm just not a believer in drafting D early in drafts that have talented forwards.
