Really? I had thought they only had him up there for a few games. Hmm, ok that makes it less impressive then

Look it up folks, this will be under the definition of irony. Get rid of Cogs, bring in guys like Nuge, Yak, Eberle. #progress.

Seriously though, Raymond is my vote

Ryan O'Reilly is pretty surprising IMO. This is a player that didn't score 20 in juniors or the NHL, and even in AAA Minor Midget he only scored 31 goals. Yet he has 25 this season with an outside chance of 30.

I don't find that hard to believe. He's a former 40 goal scorer. He's only had one good season since then, but I'd expect him to score at least 20 given first line ice time.

I thought the same thing when he first signed, but the instant you watch him play, you wish the team had 18 of him!

And you thought that at some point in time at the beginning of this season?

That would be more surprising to me than him reaching 20 goals this year.

Before the season started, did anyone know who Tomas Hertl was?

We'll he still has 15 goals in 35 games, until Dustin Brown got him. He might come back pretty soon and score 5 more in 10.

He was a 17th overall pick so I'm going to go ahead and say "yes".

I think Tyler Johnson & Ondrej Palat win this thread. HM to Reilly Smith.

What's surprising in Montreal is that Pacioretty is the only one to have passed the 20 goal mark, he has 30. The closest behind him has 17....

And Staal isnt?

Lot's of surprises... my favorite one would be Ryan Johansen I would think... came in so hyper to the league but clearly wasnt ready for it but finally took off this year. Blue Jackets got a good team and they will only become better.

When I made this thread I was looking for more established NHLers to be mentioned rather then rookies but after seeing all the names I'll throw out another Cam Atkinson mainly because I didn't think his game would translate to the NHL. Along with the fact his TOI is less then most players around the 20 goal mark.

For Minnesota it has to be Justin Fontain. If Heatley wasn't on this team he wouldnt be getting benched/4th line mins so much and would have prob would have hit, or came very close to 20 goals for the Wild this season.

Quick edit: i guess if it comes down to it he is a rookie... but cmon, the guys 25 years old and has been playing in the AHL for 3 years, and looked like an established NHL'er as soon as he was given a decent shot since game 1.

My vote goes to Bonino. I always thought he was a 3rd line guy and now I think he gets ice time with Perry and Getzlaf and does very well. Good for him

Gustav Nyquist is the leading goal scorer of the Red Wings at 17 goals. Started the year in Grand Rapids behind such greats as Dan Cleary, Mikael Sammuelsson, and Todd Bertuzzi.

Rick Nash for ONLY have 20 goals so far for an apparent elite sniper.

Dustin Byfuglien, because 20 goal scoring defensemen just really aren't very common.

And eventually Steven Stamkos for inevitably hitting 20 goals in a season where he broke his ****ing tibia.
Johansen is the only surprise here. Maybe Byfuglien, but definitely not "most surprising."

Johnson, Palat, and Stamkos (who is sitting comfortably at 15 goals)

In all seriousness though, Ryan O'Reilly has 25 when his former highest was 18.

Vermette has surpassed 20 for the first time since 09-10
Jaden Schwartz and Craig Smith both hit the 20 goal mark for the first time.

Karlsson could hit 20 this season.

I'm surprised Malkin only has 19

Joel Ward is really surprising, I thought his strong playoffs was more of an aberration (which it somewhat is) and that he wouldn't ever put up significant totals.

Seeing those 3 names in a row and realizing they were/are all on the Wings this year really drives home the "loyal to a fault" criticism of Holland.

Craig Smith is having a good year for us. 20-20 on a low scoring team. Not to bad.

Jagr.I didn't think he could get 20,it looked like he had completely lost the ability to score in last year's playoffs.

Brendan Gallagher's at 17. Not bad for his first full season if he cracks 20.

He's only played 52 games. Scoring at a 32 goal pace if he played the whole year, which is pretty normal for him.
