Again I'd be amazed. Not sure why you would build a 230M tower in Edmonton or if the clay composition here would even be that ideal for a building of that height. Would require pretty incredible base and concrete piles for a tower of this height to be built here.

Not to mention relaxing of some height restrictions which for some reason are still in effect.

Oh, and the Bow is a beautiful building. We'll see what this one looks like.

Gotta say as well that in the new millennium a lot of the fun of these things have gone away. The main reason you would want a tower of this height as a citizen is if you had a chance to go up the tower and look at the building and the new viewpoint. They don't make these public viewing platforms a part of these builds anymore and there isn't one at the Bow, not at EPCOR, and not likely at this one. Nice to look at I guess but you never get up there unless you work there.

Would be nice for Edmonton to have even one publicly available viewing platform from any tower downtown. We're the only city I know of that doesn't have this.
I'm not a huge fan of the Bow in Calgary. Too fat of a building. Doesn't blend in well with the rest of the skyline.

Telus Sky and Brookfield place better developments down there.

Public viewing platforms - they're popular for some bizarre reason IMO. Have done it in various cities including NYC, Tokyo, Vancouver, Toronto - meh experience. Tourist traps.

The Bow transforms the skyline. Its a gamechanger. Beautiful build. Absolutely stunning. The width of it just tends to add to the awe and enormity of it. Plus that I hear its beautiful from the inside with the concave view of the building just adding to some amazing views. That would be some kind of place to be working in.

To me the Bow is the best tower in Western Canada. Not even close.

Plus I don't ever hear people complaining that the Shard doesn't blend in with London. Is it supposed to? These designs bring an energy and different feel. They add something truly unique.

Viewing platforms are popular the world over. People love to go up and get an Eagle eye view of surroundings. This being innately ingrained in us. Nothing tacky about it it services a pretty basic curiosity and want to be up above. Specifically to have an Arena build like this and not have a viewing platform to see it from above would be very strange.

Stantec and Lamb's condos come to mind. The arena construction has just begun and we've got tangible growth.

From the City's website, they have some projects in the works.

How many of these revitalization projects would be taking place without the arena project? We are in the district's infancy, and already have major projects in the works, towers that will lead the way in the skyline, and developers who specifically stated they are investing in this area because of the arena district.

Not sure what your links above are for. Enterprise Square has been around for a decade and the Quarters has been in planning since before most posters on this board were born

Looks like there could be impetus but there was being impetus already. Like I mentioned the Pearl, Icon towers, Fox Towers, Quarters Towers and what they are building on RHW have all been cited for quite awhile and all precede the Arena deal.

People have been citing some of those builds as a resultant but that's not really accurate.

We'll see what Stantec brings. Hopefully not an ugly bland tower. Better not resemble the OKC design. That thing is monstrous, not in a good way.

I work for a company in the Bow and we have training classrooms at the top of the tower. incredible views.

Some of these projects may have been underway a million years ago, but with the EAD, you can bet your bum these projects will actually take shape before we die of old age.

Yup!

Western Canada's newest and tallest building!

I hope the 71 story 'Edmontonian' is approved as well. The DT is on fire and its about time somebody broke the restricted hieghts in this city by a large margin!

EDMONTON ARENA DISTRICT JOINT ADVENTURE ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF EDMONTONíS TALLEST TOWER
Aug 26, 2014
EDMONTON (Aug. 26, 2014) Ė The Edmonton Arena District (EAD) joint venture, between Katz Group and WAM Development Group, announced today the construction of Edmontonís newest and tallest tower and one of the tallest structures in Western Canada. The new 62-storey tower will be located in the Edmonton Arena District on the corner of 102 street and 103 Avenue with Stantec as the anchor tenant.

EAD-Tower-Rendering450Designed to be a LEED Gold Certified building, this mixed-use office, retail and residential project will span approximately one million square feet. The 746 feet high (224 metres) tower, which will host 26 storeys of offices and close to 320 residential units, will be one of the largest mixed use buildings in Western Canada. Construction will begin this fall and the building is scheduled to open in summer 2018. The iconic architecture and innovative design of the new tower will be a significant addition to the Edmonton Arena District and will help elevate and revitalize Edmontonís downtown core.

Should have added 3 more floors or an observation deck and beat the Bow tower by 1m.

The Stanley Cup is 89.54 centimeters high, if they made the building 4 Stanley Cups taller....

Apparently 224 m is to the top of the building but not the top of the spire. They are still designing the cap, I bet it magically ends up being >14 m and beats the Bow (or maybe even Brooksfield tower).

Cost is ~$500 million.

Good to see they are thinking big, but a little less on the ugly side would have been nice too.

Wonder how much of that residential will be affordable for a citizen of this city, or if it will even be available for us peasants.

You city dwellers never cease to amaze me. I don't see the attraction in a big hunk of concrete and metal in the middle of my view of the sky. City folks love this stuff though and eat it up. Different personalities for sure, but that's what makes this world a fun place to live.

Unveiling was interesting. Curtain goes down, a few polite claps, and silence...

Gawking at the Render looking like the Westin sheathed in glass propped up on the Telus building.

Anybody here critiquing the Bow should be honest about what this is looking like.

There go any dreams for iconic surroundings..

High, yes, but mundane, yes.
