Staal would be perfect for the Oilers, what would Carolina want for him? Would one of Eberle or Yakupov + one of Marincin or Klefbom be enough?

Staal family = most overrated brothers in league history. I'd take Skinner before that cry baby Staal.

This type of speculation comes out of media guys (re: Staal/Ward, etc..) every few years when the Canes struggle and are out of it early. Usually, Rutherford is pretty open about wanting to trade guys if he really wants to and McKenzie seems to have a solid relationship with Rutherford.

If McKenzie starts reporting it (as more than speculation), then I'll take is serious. If not, I'll treat it as nothing but media guys speculating and trying to grab attention.

Carolina has a lot of good solid pieces, especially up front (E. Staal, J. Staal, Skinner, Semin, Lindholm, etc). I feel like all they need to do is tweak the depth, and add a major piece on the blueline (potentially at the cost of a guy like like Skinner), and they could jump up the EC.

It would make zero sense to trade Skinner. Even if prepping for a rebuild, the guy is only 21. He is oozing with skill but is inconsistent. Consistency will come with age.

I wonder how Jordan would feel if they traded Eric considering he left Pittsburgh, the team he won a Cup with and is still a contender, to go play with him in Carolina.

I say one of Eric Staal or Jeff Skinner needs to be traded this offseason, but not both. They just don't coexist, it's a case of where the parts are better than the sum. I think Peter Karmanos will make Jim Rutherford move one of these guys and then you'll see Rutherford retire from the GM position with Ron Francis taking over.

Leafs and the Canes have dealt with each other in the past so I reckon to get a deal done. But if the Carolina are trading to get rid of salary it would mean they dont want to add any and then Leafs would have to deal salary away elsewhere and then it gets problematic.

And I dont think you can add E Staal to the Leafs without moving Phaneuf. Both for cap reasons and I reckon Staal would want to be the leader and the guy wearing the C (and so would I).

The Hurricanes definitely need this.

Would be nice (for my keeper team) to see Staal go to a better team.

You mean a team where he can't lead the league in tripping calls and only play half the season?

FWIW, if they do end up moving Eric, I'd personally be still willing to give you a full refund on a JStaal return even though your 30 days are up. Rather have him back than Kesler.

I'd love to see Nashville acquire Skinner. He's exactly what they're looking for - a young forward with solid offensive skills. He's only 21 I think, and scores around a 0.7ppg pace. He'd look great on a line with Wilson and Smith, or maybe with Jarnkrok next season.

I'd be OK with seeing Nashville part with:
2014 1st (going to be a high pick - the way they're playing right now, possibly top 5. Definitely top 10.)

or

Eckholm (talented left-handed D-man, been swapping between 2nd/3rd pairing with MDZ - young, with a load of talent, but stuck behind a deep defense group in Nashville)

And then maybe a 2nd as well, with either one of those? So either Eckholm+2nd, or 2014 1st + 2nd. I'm not sure that's enough value for Carolina so maybe it ends up being Eckholm + 1st. I'm terrible at judging trade value.

They should dump Skinner.

There's always a GM out there who way overvalues offensive numbers but Skinner is a defensive disaster and those kinds of players never win anything.

I'd say Jeff Skinner is more likely to go then Eric.

Either way, I'd think the other team is going to have to overpay for it to happen.

He really isn't half as bad as people make him out to be. He is an above average 3rd line center and there is no reason to be disappointed with him unless you were one of those honestly thinking you'd be getting Jordan Staal lite + a top10 pick + for Jordan Staal original.

E Staal for the Oilers first pick would be something. Edmonton probably adds another solid piece as well but Carolina might bite because of all the salary they'd save.

But something like that could really re-vamp both teams, and accomplish what both are looking for.
It is near impossible to find a trade that would give them the assets they need without any money coming back. I also don't see us adding our 1st - there is no way the difference between Nuge+Yak vs Staal brothers is one of Reinhart/Ekblad/Bennett. I could maybe see a swap of firsts so the Canes can nab the C of their choice and we hopefully land Ritchie or Virtanen, but that's only if Ekblad is off the table when we pick.

No one is denying the Staal boys are the more valuable players in that equation, but Nuge will continue to develop and his 7 years @ 6 per will be a bargain in a couple years. Meanwhile Eric is a 8.25 hit for 2 more years, getting 9.5 in actual dollars, and likely looking for something in the 7-8 range for his next contract. When you factor in contracts and potential, I think those two are pretty even. Jordan compared to Yak is a larger gap, but you also have a player on his ELC for 1 more year and contractual control for 4 beyond that. So I guess if we're adding more than Marincin it is either another prospect (maybe Bogdan Yakimov, 6'4 210lb 2 way C), or flipping 1st rders.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a team that can top that offer.

I could see Cam Ward to Calgary in the summer.

Seems like a team that could use him. Carolina will need to retain 1.5-2M of Ward's salary, for each of the remaining two years. It's a pretty unattractive contract.

I could see something like:

Ramo (cap number 2.75M) and a pick in 2015 (3rd rounder maybe?)

Ward (1.5M salary retained - brining his cap number for the Flames to 4.5M)

Carolina saves 1.75M in cap space in the deal in year one, and 4.5M less the cost of a UFA goalie in subsequent years. They could also consider buying out Ramo and going with Peters as the backup to Khudobin.

Other clubs that might be in the mix are obvious:

NYI, Buffalo, Ottawa and Vancouver.

So they traded a good bit of value to the Penguins to acquire Jordan Staal so he can play with his brother Eric, and now they're thinking about trading Eric?
