FWIW, I saw incredible improvement in Couturier's skating during the preseason as well. He was a much more confident player then I had ever season, too.

But when the season started, that confidence disappeared. I thought he was atrocious to start the year (so was the rest of the team, obviously), but after the Berube mini camp, his game really took off.

So I can see why someone would think it was a Berube thing, but it was definitely evident in the preseason.

Yep, and you're right about the confidence too. During the preseason he seemed like exactly the player we were hoping he would develop into, unfortunately it didn't last for some reason but hopefully that's who we'll see in October.

Alright, if others saw it too, then perhaps Berube didn't have the impact on Sean's skating that he had on many of the other players.

That said, Berube's emphasis on skating will probably bode well for training camp and hopefully our offseason plans.

This article from October mirrors a lot of the comments we heard after the Rangers series.

I remember being very happy sean worked on his skating in that first preseason showing against toronto. He looked great. By seasons end he regressed.

He did have his usual playing time nearly doubled this year, against top players. He probably got worn down.

That's true, and we also don't know exactly when he got his sports hernia.

Then that would explain it. Hopefully he's 100% next year and can get quicker over the summer, he would be so much better with some more speed.

Next year can only bring improvements (knock on wood), he'll be more experienced with playing insane competition, hopefully he'll work on his skating more, and maybe he'll have Laughton to help take some of the pressure off. And if Berube can work on skating during camp this season maybe we can see some improvements in the skating for the whole team. (I'm less optimistic about that)

Did he actually have hernia surgery?

I remember that the talk was he 'might have it repaired via surgery' but I missed on how it all played out... sorry if it was alreay answered before

EDIT Ok, it has just been made official that he had surgery

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall gave a brief injury update today on forward Sean Couturier.

“Sean Couturier had successful abdominal surgery this past Friday. He has started rehab at our training facility and should be fully recovered in 5-6 weeks.”
Quote:
"I think there was a point in January where he was checked," said Holmgren on May 2. "But it was never at the point where we had to do anything other than maintenance."
Well there is our answer when the sports hernia was discovered.

On Twitter I saw "INJURY UPDATE" and "Sean Couturier" and got worried for a second...

this is good news though, hopefully he can still get a bit faster before next season.

Yes. It will be about getting healthy only and not improving. Too bad.

Agreed, but he should still have some time before the season. Also, like you pointed out, his skating seemed so much better at the start of the year. The timing of the injury according to Hextall would indicate he may have been laboring for a while.

So maybe just getting healthy will get him back up to that level, too.

no I think he just means that he will be rehabbing a lot to get back healthy instead of starting day 1 healthy and working on getting faster/better on faceoffs/ etc..

The timing of the injury would also explain why his play took a bit of a dip around the Olympic break and never quite recovered. He wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but his play was a step or two better for the first half of the season.

Hopefully he spends the early part of the summer recovering and then the second half working on his skating and faceoffs.

5-6 weeks takes us to July. He still has two months to work with a power skater to improve. Not too worried.

There was a convo on twitter saying that it was possible but Timmy doesn't remember that I suppose. He is just a sour old man.
