Thomas Vanek isn't the dominant force we expected him to be. (Update: sick/hurt?)

He did great tonight. Some people are quick to criticize.

I agree .....

Plus, a single tip and he will score. Definitely has potential for a 40g 40a season. Only knock he seems to lack a bit of fire, Vanek at is best is beastly better then what we see.

Since Vanek arrived, the chemistry on this Habs team has been amazing ! And continues to get better game by game.......We have a REAL GM who knows the game so I would think Marc will do anything to keep Vanek......if it were me making the decision, I would make Vanek my priority....

We are 7-4 since he started playing with a 3 loss to start his season here. So since that we are 7-1

Important to remember that even the best scorers out there only tend to score in about 1/3rd of the games. As long as he's getting on the scoresheet in over half the games, though, in bunches or not, he'll be doing what he's paid to do. If he ends up being enough of a difference on a shift-to-shift basis to trickle down and benefit his linemates and/or the lines that roll after him, all the better.

He's definetly is making our entire team click more. Putting our best Kids with Pleky allowed them to be more creating and battling in the O-zone, while our Veteran 3rd line is holding their front very well.

We are a better team as a whole because of Vanek.

Team is so much more solidified with Vanek. Pacioretty, DD, Vanek, Galchenyuk, Plekanec, Gallagher is much better than what we had going before.

Love Vanek's reaction after scoring his goal tonight. Looked so happy

5g 4a 9pts in 11 games with the Habs so far. We've had rough stretch around the Cali trip. Since, we've been playing better. We still have a few things to fix. However one thing is undeniable, Vanek is definitely helping out. Our 5-5 scoring has improved, so has our PP.

He's giving us chances to score, which is exactly what we needed. It may just be me, but he seems to be enjoying his time with us. I know everyone around the league believes he's going to the Wild, so did I. My hopes he re-signs here are definitely more than just dreams now. I hope we keep him longer term.

The idea of him signing for 3-5 years here is real good, but I'm sure he'll be looking for the 7-8 years deal.

Vanek is the ***** sp far. No other way to look at it. He's the top line power forward Gallagher just cannot be. And he's the kind of shooter who feeds off Desharnais' passing skill. i've sat within 10 rows from the ice more than 15 times this season, and that is what stands out most in DD's game.

IF the team can compete into the second/third round.....

That's what happens when Gionta isn't in the top 6 anymore. I'm really glad Therrien is finally understanding where the players really belong.

Gallys in the top 6
+ Gionta on the 3rd line
=Success

clearny not watching enough of Vanek, he isnt just a complement to the DD line, he's the best player on it. can pass as well as DD and his shot is as good as Patches.

and huh, NO, he's not a power forward.

i wouldn't call him a power forward but he can play in traffic and the dirty areas

Last time we had a player who could score without trying too hard? Must re-sign him. Offer him the 8th year if need be to get it done. No other team can.

Vanek is exactly what this team was missing.

I just hope that Bergevin can fit him under the cap.

I was playing around with capgeek's Armchair GM mode and if we get rid of Bourque and re-sign Gionta to a cheaper contract (Bergevin loves him, he's not going anywhere), we would actually be able to fit in Vanek at $8M, Subban at $8.5M, and Markov at $5.75M.

Forwards:

Vanek ($8M)
Plekanec ($5M)
Pacioretty ($4.5M)
Gionta ($4M)
Briere ($4M)
Desharnais ($3.5M)
Prust ($2.5M)
Moen ($1.85M)
Eller ($1.5M)
Galchenyuk ($925k)
Weise (800k)
White (735k)
Gallagher ($685k)
Bournival ($660k)

Defence:

Subban ($8.5M)
Markov ($5.75M)
Emelin ($4.1M)
Gorges ($3.9M)
Beaulieu ($925k)
Tinordi ($870k)

Goalies

Price ($6.5M)
Budaj ($1.4M)

This would leave us with a cap space of $250,000 (if the salary cap is $71,100,000). Our defence definitely needs work and we'd probably have to get rid of one (or two) of our bottom 6 forwards.

That's awesome but I hope if we have to re-sign Gio it will be cheaper than 4 million.

The only thing is we'd need more D men then 6 too
