Not sure but off the top of my head I think Brewer, Chara & Redden will be free agents next year.

I'm not 100% on that though.

Also, Hossa and Luongo will be UFAs for sure if they accept their arbitration contracts.

Brewer has 2 more years before he's UFA eligible.

doesn't the 7 year thing kick in though next year?

I could be wrong, but that's what I thought it was.

I think the 7 year thing kicks in a few years, next year it's 8 years.

But he's played 6 seasons so far, and the lockout counts as 1. So after this season that will make 8 total. Since he's on a 1-year deal (accepted his QO), I think it means he will be a UFA.

I believe it's the following for UFA eligiblity

(You must play 4 seasons in the NHL to qualify for UFA eligibility at all)
[2005-06] 31 yrs of age
[2006-07] 29 yrs of age or 8 years of service (whichever comes first)
[2007-08] 28 yrs of age or 7 years of service (whichever comes first)
[2008-duration of CBA contract] 27 yrs of age or 7 yrs of service (whichever comes first)

and the 04-05 year off is supposed to count as a year of service.

2007-08 28 yrs of age or 8 years of service (whichever comes first)
2008-end of CBA contract 27 yrs of age or 7 yrs of service (whichever comes first)

But everyone is saying Hossa is eligible for UFA at the end of this season, and he's only 26 right now. I thought the 8 year rule started right now, and it got downgraded to a 7 year rule at the end of the 06-07 season.

No 9 year service. It's 8 years.

So the only way to be eligible for UFA at the end of 05-06 is to be 31 years old? I was positive that the 8-year rule starts right away. That's excellent news if true, though, because then Hossa, Chara, and Redden won't become UFAs this summer.

No, that's for the beginning of the season. Think of it as heading into the 05-06 season I need to fullfill the following stipulations to qualify for UFA eligibility (rinse and repeat for the other years).

8 year rule comes into effect next summer along with age 29.
