#74| New Jersey Devils @ New York Islanders | March 29th 7:00 PM | F/SOW 2-1

Preview

All time series record: The Islanders lead 119-87-22. Islanders all time @ Home VS Devils are 69-35-11

The New Jersey Devils still have a chance to make the playoffs, though they haven't been doing much to get themselves there.

The Devils are in a pack of five teams battling for the final two postseason berths in the Eastern Conference heading into Saturday night's matchup with the Islanders.

New Jersey (31-28-14) went into the final 10 games of the season five points behind the postseason cutoff before picking up a point with a 3-2 shootout home loss to Phoenix on Thursday.

The Devils, who fell to 0-9 in shootouts and extended their NHL-record streak to 13 straight losses in the tiebreaker dating to last season. They hadn't gone past overtime since Jan. 16.

The Devils, 2-4-1 in their last seven, trail Columbus, Detroit, Washington and Toronto for the two East wild-card spots with nine games remaining.

On its last trip to Long Island, New Jersey had its second-highest goal outburst of the season in a 6-1 victory March 1. The Devils also earned a 2-1 win there Dec. 28 after the Islanders handed them one of their shootout losses, 4-3 in New Jersey in the first meeting this season Oct. 4. New Jersey has gone 8-2-0 on the road in the series since January 2011.

New York (28-35-10), last in the Metropolitan Division, is coming off a shootout loss of its own. The Islanders had won four of six before falling 3-2 in Tampa on Thursday, but earned at least a point for the seventh time in 10 games.

Ryan Strome and Matt Donovan scored in regulation for the Islanders, winners of six of their 11 shootouts this season.

Kyle Okposo, with team highs of 27 goals and 69 points, was a late scratch due to a lower-body injury and his status against New Jersey is uncertain.

i think Capuano thinks that Strome was a 5th round pick (not 5th overall) who led the AHL in penalty minutes (instead of points) which explains why he's on a line with 2 other 4th line grinders. The guy is ****ing lost. He's gotta go.

There's not much else for him to play with. I don't like Capuano one bit, but what is he going to do with that lineup?

Yeah I mean say what you want but Nelson and Neilsen ARE ahead of strome at this point, so they should be playing with the better wingers....

I like his wingers. They're big and physical and can win the board battles. Strome is an opportunist and they give him time and space for him to do his thing. They separate man from puck, get it to Strome, he continues the play. More often that not, he's the one that makes the key decision that leads to an offensive chance for that line. He does a nice job of surveying the play and then finding the open man for the initial chance. He works very nicely with CdH-Hammer, he finds them to shoot at the net and CMac and Martin crash the net for rebounds. Strome's style of play is very reminiscent of JT's rookie year in that sense. Strome could stand to shoot more, but that should come with time.

^^^

I remember JT's first season and everyone was surprised to find that we had a playmaker and not a goal-scorer on our hands. Strome seems to be similar, your right. Not that we expected Strome to be a scorer per say, but that he could stand to shoot more than he does.

JT was dishing like woah his first season, 3 years later he decided... screw it, i'll just score myself.

I think he found a nice balance this season. Can't wait till next year.

I think this is where the high hockey intelligence manifests itself. JT just couldn't do what he wanted to do physically so he had to adapt his game. His skating wasn't good enough, he wasn't strong enough, he was physically overmatched and was being asked to be an NHL #1C. We were expecting Mike Bossy and we got a Pierre Turgeon, wtf? Still great, but not what we were expecting. JT now is the most complete offensive player in the league behind Crosby and possibly Malkin. Tavares is such a nice blend of goal scorer and playmaker, almost symmetrical even.

Strome desperately needs to get bigger and stronger, we forget that he still can't drink legally in the US. He probably has the best mentor you could ask for in Tavares too. Strome is just getting started.

This will probably be the last game I go to this season unless I get some free tickets to the caps game.

I'm going to this game tonight only because my brother got me tickets for my birthday. I haven't watched a game since March 2nd.

Martin-Strome-McDonald line should be dropped to the 4th slot. They don't deserve 3rd line minutes.

This has two potentials, be a blow out or a boring 1-1 game.

Probably going to be the ladder, Devils 2-1 in regulation. Shots will be like 20-16 or something stupid.

Yep. The most boring game on the schedule. Should've been a matinee.

Can't tell if cereal.

Just in case you missed it, Strome and that line had a great game last time out, they deserve those minutes.

They've actually been the teams best line the past few games...

I've got a bad feeling about this one.
Devils are a big physical veteran group who love to play patient and slow the game down to a grind. Our high flyin rookies might have a hard time breaking them down.

Should be a good test.

Despite the fact that this has been an absolutely miserable season, I'm actually a bit bummed that there's only 8 games remaining on the schedule.

+1, It's a shame that we were done by XMAS after last years exciting finish. Very difficult to maintain excitement when your not sure whether it's better off to lose so we can get a better draft pick.

I hate when the season ends. After this year it's kind of a relief but it's going to be a long off season with a lot of unknowns.
