I want to see what the consensus is. I say he's not, while others equate him with Bob Gainey.

When you have committed to him contractually for that many years, he had better be.

Zajac is not a sexy player, and he is underrated by those who deal solely in offensive stats. But he's proven to be a superb tonic playing alongside top-skilled offensive wingers (e.g., Kovalchuk, Parise, Jagr), which is not a small point. And most important, he is a guy you want out on the ice in every game situation. That, as much as anything, makes him a core player.

And whether or not you, I or anyone else deems him a "core" player, his minutes and role prove without question that NJD considers him one. For better or worse.

(I'll bet my house that the majority of opinions here will differ.)

Adding: he's not a top line center on a Cup-serious team. But he is not a third line, bottom-six "plug" either...except on an allstar or fantasy league team.

That's what I think as well. I just want to gauge the opinions outside of devil-land. I have never seen someone play so many prime minutes per game and under-perform on a scoring line, like Zajac has the last 4 seasons. Imagine for a second if Zajac was playing in Montreal or Toronto right now? He'd need a disguise to get into the arena.

He better pull some magic out of some hole soon that's for sure. He does fly under the HF radar though. Definitely not someone you should build around.

Every team to win the Cup since the lockout has a Selke Finalist, so yes.

You must think Boston needs to get a #1 center since Bergeron only put up 62 PTS with a team that scored 261 goals.

what a ridiculous thread.

Zajac is paid as a 2nd line center. its not his fault that there are no better centers on the Devils

he put up ~50 points last year while being a beast on the faceoff dot and an elite defensive shutdown center

"hes a plug" is one of the more ridiculous comments I've seen about a player on here before. congrats.

considering all the players that have left the DEvils over the past few years, its pretty sad that Devils fans can't appreciate one of the few guys that WANTS to stay in NJ.

He's an OK player. I dont think he's a core player you can build your team around. He doesn't have the elite skills set. But he is a valuable player. A good supportive player.

Is he a core player? Depends on the team but yes on most teams. Is he someone you build around? No, he's not a franchise player.

After Kopitar and Bergeron, the best defensive forward in the league.

He's a core player but I don't think you can build around him specifically.

He's a complimentary player, and a very good one. But hell no, he's not part of a core

Are you serious, if you have to build around him you are in serious trouble. Serious, serious trouble.

Are Devils fans unhappy with what he brings to the table?
Is he trade bait now?
