The Coaching Thread - Part III

The final chapter? Last thread is almost at 1K and this is still a hot topic in this town. Added a poll to this thread as some had suggested.

He should be fired, but if we fire all the other coaches, and bring in some quality, experienced, assistants, I'd be ok giving him part of next year

After he said he knows exactly what to do next year, how can you not give him at least 2 months next season? It will be good for a laugh.

Where is the "keep him until the end of the season to ensure a top 3 draft pick" option?

There is no need to keep him around for that anymore, he insured that it would be top 3 a while ago now.

Even if he was fired in the offseason, the team would be lucky to recovered by the end of next season in time for the Mcdavid sweepstakes with how badly Eakins has messed up the team this year.

I think it would be cool if we just DIDNT HAVE a head coach next year.

Screw it.

We can fire Eakins and then nobody reputable is going to come along because (as i've said a million times before) no reputable coach is going to come to Edmonton if they're not allowed to choose their own coaching staff to work under them!

They need to lose all the assistants including Acton. Let Eakins hire his own staff. Then it's all on him from a coaching perspective as it should be. Give him a year.

Caveat 1 is this is an old boys network from Katz on down.
Caveat 2 is Eakins needs players, as Bowman couldn't coach this sorry ass group.

So in the end it really doesn't matter because were ****ed either way, as neither will happen.

Paul MacLean didn't get a ringing endorsement from Brian Murray. If MacLean gets fired I would text Eakins so fast, and tell him he's fired. Hire MacLean and let him pick his own assist coaches.

Yeah, this. Organization put itself in an idiotic spot where they couldn't fire him this year.

Still shocked that they wouldn't fire the assistants already.

Can we get put pressure on the organization to get rid of this ******? I'll bet a "fire Eakins, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap" every home game for the rest of the year will do it.

We really need new assistant coaches to help teach some fundamentals to our young players..regardless of whether Eakins is back or not.

They aren't firing him or the assistants so there's no use in even discussing it.
Eakins is an extension of MacT behind the bench and Bucky and Smith would survive an apocalypse. Them and cockroaches.

I think time would be better served to discuss player personnel changes since that's more realistic but then again, MacT seems to be as attached to the core players just as he is to the coaching staff so i wouldn't expect any drastic changes there either. Remember, MacT is seeing big progress being made.
Why am i still an Oilers fan?

I read Bruce McCurdy's player grades in the Journal pretty regularly but not religiously - today's the first time I can remember him openly bagging Eakins in his column:

Quote:
"Coach Dallas Eakins, 1. Enough, already. His team was unprepared for the start of the game, getting badly outplayed and grossly outshot for the brief time the score was actually close. His charges were disorganized and undisciplined, careless with the puck and lax in defensive coverage. The powerplay was terrible. His club got shellacked on home ice yet again. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"
Found it kind of interesting

When they first hired Eakins, I thought he would bring in a fiery attitude and whip the boys here and there. Especially when he came in trying to change the culture (getting rid of old pictures, promoting healthy eating, fitness fanatic, no BS attitude). But I have hardly ever seen that intense fiery attitude behind the bench, except when he got sprayed by Taylor Hall. Instead, whenever the team is losing and the cameras pan on him, what I see is a coach who looks lost, confused, and over his head. What he has shown so far this season has fell far below what I expected of him. But maybe I expected too much from a rookie head coach of such a young and horrible team.
But then again, you see the job that Patrick Roy has done in Colorado as a rookie head coach and the fiery passion he brings.. it makes you really wonder why things are so different in Edmonton.

This is hardly new. Many games over the past few years the team hasn't been ready to go from the drop of the puck.

I would usually be willing to give a rookie head coach a bit more slack for a bad season but Eakins just came across as such an arrogant know it all right from day one so its kind of funny to watch him doing so poorly. He has done so many things that make him unlikeable as a coach without even looking at the horrible results

- first press conference says things like this is how you win games in the nhl and he hasnt even coached a game then proceeds to tell the media that the first thing to go is their doughnuts

- tweets during the offseason about fitness and the tweet when Ference was named captain, "he will UNITE us"

- disses other coaches ideas when promoting his own like not taking part in morning skates

- removes all the old pictures in the dressing room and hallways

- makes a big deal about replacing the medias coffee and doughnuts with water and vegetables

- comments on the Kassian high stick calling it a "disturbing play by a disturbing player". Even though he may think that and many on these boards probably agree with him hes commenting negatively on another teams player and he hasnt even coached a game yet

- after the game against Montreal where Lars Eller makes those junior team comments about the Oilers Eakins post game address was pretty much spent ripping Eller. He comes out and thanks Eller for the win and then says its a young guy who shouldnt be making those comments yet Eakins is a young coach who is again commenting on other teams players and in this case trying to teach him a lesson. He just looked like a hypocrite and a moron during the whole thing

- the way he handled Yakupov and pretty much every young player especially to start the season. RNH getting 25 mins in his first game back and him not changing line matchups when the young kids are getting torched while defensive specialist Boyd Gordon is sitting on the bench

- chop wood carry water

- how he handled the whole jersey incident by calling the fan a quitter, then makes a lame apology saying the people of Edmonton in the oil industry work hard and are not quitters

- on Oil Change when talking about "chop wood carry water" he again talks about how 99% of the fans in the building chop wood and carry water everyday and have built and oil industry of of hard work and chopping wood and carrying water. News flash Dallas Not every person in the city works on the rigs

- The whole water spraying incident with Hall where he has to fix his hair and change his suit because he was sprayed down. The only emotion he showed on the bench during an 8-1 loss

I'm sure there are more things hes done that have bugged me but I find him so unlikeable as a coach. He came in so arrogant and seemed more concerned about jamming his health and fitness ideals down everyones throats than he did about actually coaching. Now that hes having one of the worst seasons in franchise history hes finally realized that maybe hes not innovative master coach that he thought when he took the job

Gregor had a good article about this in the Journal...unlike Eakins, Roy has assistants who have loads of head and assistant coaching experience at multiple levels of hockey to give the team the necessary level of structure and technical savvy to balance out Roy's rah-rah and passionate speeches.

Eakins has Smith and Bucky (i.e. the owner's mole) as "support". Seriously, what a gong show to work with.

No ****. My point was that McCurdy is now openly bagging on Eakins, something he's been loathe to do relatively speaking in the past.
