wasn't Paetsch supposed to be here and flaked out, when Buffalo was here and they ended up trading him.

Historical fact:

20 years ago today, (5/29/94); the Pirates, 8 months after relocating from Baltimore, finished off their only championship in franchise history.

great video on the Pirates Facebook page, for those who liked to see what the arena looked like then, and how this club was received, and how they completed said journey.

all 3 franchises they played, no longer are in their original markets: Albany is now Charlotte, Adirondack is now San Antonio, and Moncton turned their franchise back over to the league days, if not months after.

Whitfield, Michaud join Pirates coaching staff
By Chris Roy | Updated: June 17, 2014

Quote:
PORTLAND – The Portland Pirates added a local flair to its coaching staff on Monday for the upcoming season.

Trent Whitfield was named an assistant coach while Alfie Michaud goaltending coach for the 2014-’15 season. Both are on one year contract.

“We’ve been able to identify two guys that would have been qualified to coach anywhere in the league,” said Pirates Chief Operating Officer Brad Church. “We’re lucky enough to bring them on board here where they do have that history with the team and state.”

Still so cool to see this. You guys will have a big Portland fan this upcoming year, or rather a ton from LI.

But am I reading they may not be in Portland?

Portland and Phoenix have one year left on their affiliation agreement... Whether they extend or go their separate ways will depend on the performance of the team and if PHX wants to purchase an AHL franchise and move their prospects out west. Its still early and remains to be seen.

By Chris Roy | Updated: June 18, 2014

PORTLAND – The Cumberland County Civic Center is no more – at least in name.

Cross Insurance announced on Wednesday that have reached an agreement with the Civic Center’s Board of Trustees to secure the long-term naming rights to the 7,000-seat multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue located in Portland.

I wonder what it would cost to get the sub-naming rights to the toilet paper dispenser in stall #3. If it's too much then maybe just the flush handle.

If Portland doesn't re-sign Kevin Raine, I wonder if they'd have interest in another over-age junior Dman for the upcoming season. Maybe Alex Basso (Domi), Nelson Armstrong (Carey), Jimmy Oligny (Laplante), or Jagger Dirk. All of those guys had good seasons statistically, and our scouts should have had eyeballs on them.

slow down.... we don't even know whom Arizona will send us, before we can fill the roster out.

Even at this early stage of the off-season, it's pretty obvious what the roster situation for Portland is. The forward and goalie positions are basically filled out and the defense is completely open.

Unless Murphy surprises at Coyotes training camp, he'll be sent down and have 1D minutes handed to him in Portland. Barring a trade or free agent signing, the other 7 D-men under contract will be in Phoenix. There are only two other prospect defensemen currently under contract - Melindy and Hache.

Portland needs at least 1-2 AHL veteran defensemen - personally I'd like to see a guy like Nolan Yonkman and a guy like Taylor Fedun. Guys that might need to be paid a little better, but might be able to provide some organizational depth and earn injury call-up time if things get ugly.

Additionally, Portland will need a few depth D-men. I don't know who is coming out of the NCAA or CIS this year, but the guys I mentioned above are all over-agers who did well in their years, our scouts should have seen several times, and might be worth inviting to Rookie Camp in two months for an extended viewing.

So post draft and before free agent signings/trades ...what is a good guess of what Portland's roster might look like?

I'll take a blind stab at it, without knowing if Brodeur or Werek were qualified today:

Lessio-Shinnimin-Rieder
Carey-Martinook-Samuelsson
Lane-Gaudet-Szwarz
Kulda-Dziurzynski-Stevenson

X-Murphy
X-X
Hache-Melindy
Louis

Visentin
Domingue
Lee

Really doubt that. I'd put more money on Rieder, personally. Lessio needs a top 9 role and I don't see that happening. He will be asked to dominate for a year in the AHL.

Murphy will make the team out of camp. No one brings his skillset to the team. I'd worry about my job if I'm Schlemko or Stone.

Coyotes sent out qualifying offers to Jordan Szwarz and Brandon McMillan.... They did not qualify Mathieu Brodeur, Ethan Werek & Justin Weller.

Not surprised by any of that. Lot of holes for Edwards to fill on D now though.

Well, we're getting smarter...Werek, Brodeur and Weller shouldn't have been qualified. They need to go out and get some quality Dmen to help the forwards out.

Edwards is in charge of the roster (he's GM). Let him figure it out.
