They might bring back Brodeur and Weller in a pinch if they can't find enough warm bodies. They just didn't want to qualify them. I'll cross my fingers that we finally get our.... stuff... together when it comes to the farm team.

I like what the Kings did with Jeff Schultz. He's got NHL experience, and can play a little if injuries start to run, but will basically play in the AHL and be paid by the NHL club. We should look to stack a few defenders like that and maybe sign one junior over-ager.

I think they should try to sign Nolan Yonkman, Keith Aulie, Taylor Fedun. Give the young goalies/forwards some veteran support, and be prepared to pay for it. Let the young D prospects on the big club have some rope, but have some hungry depth guys who can step in if it gets ugly or injuries mount.

Lessio-Shinnimin-Rieder
Carey-Martinook-Samuelsson
Lane-Gaudet-Szwarz
Kulda-Dziurzynski-Stevenson
Louis

Yonkman - Murphy
Aulie - Fedun
Hache - Melindy

Visentin
Domingue
Lee

It hurts me looking at the Pirates roster and not seeing Miele on it. I know it's because he's going to do the smart thing and sign somewhere else tomorrow but I just like the kid and it's going to kill me to see him leave tomorrow

It amazes me that Maloney wasn't able to find him a new home at the trade deadline. He should have been traded to a team that was missing the playoffs and evaluating young talent at the NHL level. By then it was apparent that Tippett wasn't going to play him no matter what, so why not get him a new opportunity and get an asset in return? Maybe even one that could help with the playoff push - we only missed by 2 points.

Obviously Portland was a mess by that point, but I don't think shipping Miele out would have made a difference.

The investment in vet AHL salaries is substantial - the "culture" down on the farm should much improved this upcoming season.

REMINDER, Dunegrass CC (OOB) hosting a large majority of 1994 Pirates alumni in Charity Golf Classic this Saturday, to reintoduce the new era and the new CI Arena

SURPRISING TO NOTE, why hasn't the Pirates site reflected the naming rights deal as the CCCC logo remains on team site/splash page

Nice, it's looking a hell of a lot better than last season. Much more rounded.

Tell me about the specialty teams last season. Which players played PK and which PP? Who were the top performers on each? Where'd Portland rank league wide in each category?

I only saw a handful of games for Portland.

But they were 18th in PK with 81.7% kill rate.

Their PP was tied for 7th in the league with a 20.2% rate.

Stats from theahl.com:

Lessio was fourth in rookie scoring (behind Kokhlachev) and Rieder was 10th (behind Puempel).

Lessio was 7th in the league in PP goals with 13, 2nd among rookies (Matt Puempel was the AHL rookie leader at 15).

Rieder was 18th in the league in PP goals with 10, 3rd among rookies.

Miele was 30th with 9 goals, but was 3rd in the league in PP assists with 25.

Brandon Gormley and Daine Todd were tied for 18th in the league in PP assists with 19.

I know that Brett Hextall was one of the main PK guys, but he wasn't renewed. MacMillan was another PK guy, but he only played about half the season in Portland. Martinook was the another main PK guy. But I'm really not sure who was on PK1 and PK2.

Did Lessio see significant PK time? First or second unit? Rieder?

Does anyone know if there is anywhere one can view individual PK data for the AHL?

How about the old eyeball test? Can you tell me anything about the PK last season? Prominent players and their performance?

How did Lessio look last season? How did he progress? Any information you guys have based on actually getting to watch him play would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, he signed an AHL deal with the Chicago Wolves. On a Portland note.... The Pirates sign defensemen Evan Oberg and Jordon Southorn to AHL contracts.

That's why I couldn't find the signing on the capgeek site. TSN listed the signing as SLB. I gather the Wolves are the Blues affiliate?
