More panther stuff...Bowmeester looking for 3 mill a year!!!

the beat reporter for the panthers was on the fan 590 at 12:05 and talked about the panthers.

recap...

bowmeester " a career -40" wants 3 million a year

luongo" has yet to win a playoff game" wants max money

the heat was stagnant and closing the upper bowl until Shaq showed up and the panthers want a name, sniper, they really wanted mogilney but the price and the hip made it impossible

the veteran players they signed is more a Keanan thing then a tampa rivalry thing

redden and jovanoski are players being mentioned going to FLA and Boo is a name being mentioned going out

Jokinen playing hard ball with the team

luongo is really upset( as i said yesterday), he was out with season ticket people for breakfast and other function, being the face of the franchise and he feels that Iginla, Nash and lecavalier were treated properly and he is not

Thats all for now, cheers

Dont you know JBo was on Canadas world cup team, and must therefore be one of the top six Canadian defensemen alive?

Aside from being selected to Canada's World Cup team at the age of 21? Um....

Are you paying him for what he's done or what he's going to do? Because three million seems like a bargain to me.

If he'd be willing to sign for 5 years, I'd be pretty tempted to do it.

I guess the "Young Guns" are going to be trying to make their fortunes earlier in the new NHL, with the hard cap, as opposed to just paying their dues and cashing in when UFA arrived.

Maybe people thought an earlier UFA period would mitigate this sort of thing.. guess not.

you don't pay big money for what you hope someone can do. become a good player, then you get good money. if there was no rookie cap, i'm guessing you'd want to pay crosby 6 million?

problem with that is if in 2 years he becomes one of the best defensemen in the league he would be b*tching about his contract

This is turning into an ugly situation. Bouwmeester will probably hold-out.

Doesn't matter... he'd be hooped.

In the new NHL there will be no contract b*tching, because nothing can be done about it.

Bouwmeester is still a developing player - how the heck can he realistically expect 3 million per year at this point? Weiss is getting 650K this year and he was a top 5 pick that has done as much for the Panthers as Bouwmeester has...at least at the NHL level.

Bouwmeester may be the next great defenseman (jury is still waaaaay out on that though), but he isn't anything more than a 2nd/3rd pairing defenseman that was thrust into the starting lineup b/c the Panthers had no one else and couldn't afford to play anyone but their prospects.

Unreal...

That's retarded, I hope he holds out or gets traded. Bouwmeester was a horrible pick anyways, i've said it once and i'll say it again... WE SHOULD HAVE PICKED NASH OR PITKANEN!

If Keenan was GM back then we probably would have picked Nash or Pitkanen...likely Nash. Prototypical Keenan-type player...

Don't be naive. How much do you think Crosby will be asking for when he hits free agency?

J-Bo was playing 20 minutes a night in the NHL at the age of nineteen. How many players have done that and turned out *not* to be great players?

Put it this way. If you don't want to pay him that much, there are several teams around the league that would be happy to.

They might as well just trade him to Edmonton and get it over with. Let's face it, that's where this is heading.

I agree that $3 mill per yr now is a bit high. But I could see a deal like this...

1st yr = $1.5 mil
2nd yr = $2.5 mil
average = $2 mil

$2 mil is about what top 4 guys are getting right now. That would allow FL to see if he's going to be a true bonafide #1 superstar and not kill themselves while keeping Jay reasonably happy. Then he's still 2 yrs away from UFA and you can take him to arbitration if he's not living up to expectations. If he is living up to expectations, you can then sign him to a long term deal more inline with what the other #1 defenders are getting.

if crosby becomes a star in 4 years when his contract is up, then he will make star quality money. bouwmeester is no star yet.

I wish.

Not at $3 million though.

Maybe something like a 3 year $1.7, $2, $2.2 deal.
