I can you for a fact that there a lot of disgruntled players with the arrival of Kovalchuk. Unequivocal fact. For a lot of reasons. But take a look at the turnover from 2009-10 to 2010-11.

Paul Martin was never re-signing. I'm pretty sure it was reported that Lou didn't even offer him a contract because he knew he was a goner.

The cap celing was $59.4 million that year. Paint a scenario where we have all this room even WITHOUT Kovy's contract to do anything else of substance that summer. We were spending about $35 million on 13 forwards not named Kovy, about $15.5 million on seven defensemen including Salvador who got hurt during the preseason, and $6.7 million on the goalies. That's $57.2 million by my count...$56 million with a bare bones 20-player roster. They weren't magically going to be able to find depth on the market once Sal got hurt. In the fantasy scenario where we keep Martin and Oduya and not sign Volch-Tallinder, that would have put us $1 million closer to the celing on top of it!

Straight from Paul Martin's brother through a mutual friend, I was told he was not coming back. He had eyes for Pittsburgh and wanted to go there.

There's no question that the Kovalchuk trade was a great move. You realize that he finally brought excitement to the franchise and the arena was as packed and loud as I've ever seen it when he was here. Now that he left and we're back to boring "Devils hockey" (aka score 1 goal per game and play slow grinders) the arena is back to being empty and quiet.

Kovalchuk put this team on his back two years in a row. The run with Lemaire and the playoff run were absolutely dominant performances. Meanwhile, the guy with the "C" on his jersey was nowhere to be found. I'm pretty sure he scored 1 non-empty net goal in a 10 game stretch during the Philly and Rangers series.

We are better...in every conceivable and measurable way we are better.

In very similar fashion Parise had eyes for Minnesota.

You have ignore a sizable chunk of events to simplify it that way.

Kovy or no Kovy, Paul was like Gionta - Lou was not going to pay market to keep them.

Paul was frustrated by a number of reasons. He didn't like the style of game the Devils played and the whole Olympic fiasco didn't help either.

Parise wasn't re-signing either. That, I could potentially believe had to do with Kovy just a little bit, but it had more to do with the Devils never handing out that ridiculous contract to Parise in 100 million years.

I don't even think I can think of a handful of players Lou should have paid at or above market for to retain.

Rafalski comes to mind though. Probably Zach, but I'm almost certain he didn't offer a deal for more than 8 years.

edit: How could I forget Nieds

Wouldn't it have had to been at least 8 years to even get close to the numbers they were throwing around?

Ah, yeah you're right. Who knows what the definition of "competitive" means to Lou though.

If only Suter had gone to the Wings. I remember that day people were even tracking flights from Nashville to Detroit saying it was a done deal.

It's hilarious that some posters, even after this horrendously mediocre season, still think the Devils are a better team without Kovalchuk.

I think Marty was taking a shot more at Lou than Pete. Time for Lou to give up the GM position, let him stay on has president, he's over 70, everyone gets old and retires at some point

Indeed, this was a season to forget.

The only positives I can think of are:

Jagr
Henrique, post-olympics
Gelinas (in the offensive zone)
Schneider (most of the time)

More than ready to move on from this season. Onward and upward.

The number I heard for Parise from NJ was 86 Million and supposedly there was little to no money upfront....That is not close.

I don't let sports ruin my day to day life, but waking up and reading TG's tweets was pretty upsetting. Then I saw a freshly dead cat on the side of the road on my way to work and now I'm really sad
