Captain Greg or Captain Paul?

I had to ask it.............do you let your new superstar be captain, or do you keep the prior captain who evidently talked him into coming here continue with the "C"?

[both are Lady Bing type guys with Kariya winning it twice]

Who are the assistants?

It likely stays with Greg. As much as Greg wouldn't have a problem with giving it up, Kariya's not going to ask for it, in my opinion. He'll likely be an 'A'.

Well if Paul didn't know Johnny and have the ability to call him I don't know if it would have happened. Paul said he needed to ask ?'s that only a player could have answered and it needed to be someone that he trusted. So in my estimation Johnny was huge.

In Johnson's interview on 104.5, you could tell he played a big role. Johnson's such a modest person with a small ego and refused to pat himself on the back. But you could tell throughout the conversation that he was instrumental. His 1 hour conversation last night with Kariya was likely what made Kariya go from "I wouldn't mind going to Nashville" to "I want to go to Nashville". At that point, Kariya stopped waiting for better offers and just wanted a deal to be done. I think he probably brought his seriousness to Poile this morning and said "Let's get a deal done" and Poile and Kariya's agent hammered it out.

C - Johnson
A - Walker
A - Timonen

Kariya may have to earn the "A"

Exactly. Anyone who thinks they're going to hand Kariya a letter has never played hockey or followed it for very long.

haha...at first, I had typed number instead of letter (wake up misfit, every player is given a anumber when they join a new team).

Hand? You don't hand Paul Kariya a letter. He earns it by his mere presence. He was the captain of Anaheim Mighty Ducks and has the potential to be an All-Star again. When the coaching staff gets together with the top players to discuss who will be getting the letters, Kariya's name will pop up despite having never played a game with the Preds.

I agree, and I think Kariya's lockerroom presence is not only going to be helpful, but is a big reason he's the guy we wanted. I'd not be surprised to see him wear an A. I mean...didn't Cale Hulse have one, for a while?

He only wore the A when they were rotating it around between many of the players. He did wear the A in Calgary, I believe.

Now we know what it takes to make Adzy post instead of lurk.

Taking the C away from GJ would be a slap in the face, GJ has always been a consumate professional and has earned the C on his chest. Kariya may get an A, but definitely not the C

one of the stuppiest things mike keenan (and there have been alot of them) has ever done was when they signed mark messier and took the captaincy away from trevor linden. trevor gave it up and gave it to messier and it hurt the canucks big time.

you have to earn the right to be the captain of your team, not just given it from past team experience. you could give kariya a letter, but the C.

Captains Remain.

As a follow up to this discussion earlier...all stays the same.

From today's teenessean:

Captains remain: Forward Paul Kariya served as Anaheim's captain from 1996-2003, but it doesn't look like his arrival in Nashville will bump any of the Predators captains.

Trotz said he expects Greg Johnson to remain captain, assisted by alternates Kimmo Timonen and Scott Walker.

"They were one of the sources of our success and I don't think we'll be changing that,'' Trotz said.

"And I don't think putting a letter on someone is necessary to make them a leader. Players can lead by example without that.''

It wouldn't be right to give the C to kariya at this point.

Just for example, Fedorov got one in Anaheim, just like that.

Kariya with the C? Now I've heard it all. I don't even know what to say to that.

But something tells me that with statements like that, you've got quite a bit more to see.

Two things:

1) The Nash deal. Get over yourself.
2) Giving the C to anyone that has never played a game for your team is crazy and sends the wrong message to your team as well as puts extra pressure on your new teammate.

That's all folks.
