Kind of stinks that you have to play your own draft picks one game and burn a year off their ELCs but that's signing college players in today's NHL and it's better than the alternative of Johnny signing somewhere else next year.

I believe it takes 9 games before a year is burned off of an ELC.

his ELC would have been 2 years had he signed it next year so really all this is is a small payday to get him to play pro next year.

That is really cool, people at the beginning of the season were saying that they would be happy with seeing Gaudreau sign at the end of next season, but obviously things have changed. I hope the best for the two players, I hope they will not be rushed/overhyped. Pressure won't help them but I'm not too worried.

That only applies to their 18/19 yr old seasons. Gaudreau is 20, and Arnold is 21

Good for the Flames. I do have worries about him adapting to the NHL. He will need to be sheltered. I wonder how he will do against the very big fast defenseman, and the big power lines.

Happy to see them both sign. Would have preferred to see ATO's for the Heat instead of 1 game for the Flames though.

Good for the Flames though. I'm excited to see how Gaudreau does in the upcoming years, haven't watched him play yet myself, but his stats are pretty damn crazy.

It doesn't even matter from a Flames perspective. He's signing a 3 year ELC this season, however if he was to sign it next season it would be a 2 year ELC because of his age. It's nothing more than the Flames shelling out the signing bonus.

Flames don't typically rush players. In fact they've proven they're willing to send them back to the minors if they think they have things to work on.

They have a weak roster, but they also need to hit the cap floor, so I don't think there will be too many spots for rookies next year. 2 (aside from goalie) is likely the max.

He works hard when he's out there and gets to the dirty areas. He'll fight fir pucks and win a lot of battles. He's got top hoxkey sense and if he's fast enough he should be a top winger for the Flames.

I Gaudreau is a very interesting prospect for even non-Flames fans to keep tabs on. He is tiny, but he is also super-skilled. Will he be a career AHL'er? Will he be a decent NHL'er? Will he be a superstar?

We may all have our own inclinations as to what we guess Gaudreau will eventually become, but I really don't think anyone can say for sure exactly what his ceiling is right now.

A really fascinating prospect to follow. I personally think he will be an important piece for the Flames in the future, but I can understand everyone's take on it as well.

Both teams are horrible, no one is arguing that the Oilers are good. The Flames are 22nd in GPG in the NHL (0.08 ahead of the Oilers)

I find it weird that peoples opinions or statements are disregarded just because they watch a certain team, it doesn't mean you cant form a logical opinion about another team in the NHL.

When you're in the bottom 1/3rd in the entire NHL in goals its a fair statement, just like you could say the same thing about Florida, Edmonton, Carolina, Buffalo etc.

Yeah, if only the Flames had three 1st overalls, then maybe we could be a good team.

Can someone refresh my memory or please explain how he would have become a free agent next year?

He was drafted out of the USHL and has played only 3 seasons in the NCAA. 1 more season would give him 4 seasons removed from his draft year.

I know pre 2005 that was the case of 4 years in College and you became a free agent.

Guys like Wheeler and Schultz were drafted and played another season of hockey before going to the NCAA and each only played 3 seasons in College.

So what is the ruling here in the CBA to grant JG free agency?
