He gets alot of comparisons to Patrick Kane because he is has unbelievable lateral movement, is extremely elusive and reads plays so well that he seems to know what guys will do before they known what they will do. Barry Melrose has also compared his vision and play behind the net to that of Gretzky.

Now before some some jump all over me I am not suggesting he will have that type of career, we all know it's going to be an uphill battle for him.

It's best just not to mention Gretzky in any comparison to any prospect. Regardless of what some analyst said. It's just an open door for ridicule when you compare anyone to the best player ever.

To be fair that "analyst" coached Gretzky.

That doesn't mean it's not a silly comparison. A lot of players make plays from behind the net.

comparing styles of play is not saying guys will turn out the same. Doesn't make the comparison "silly" only things that are "silly" are people that take comparisons literally and people that worry about being ridiculed by people that clearly don't understand comparisons aren't literal.

I'm fully aware of what comparing styles is. However, regardless, when you attach the name Gretzky in any form of comparison, people are going to balk.

As long as the people in here weren't poking fun at the Oilers when a scout or two said that RNH had the best vision since Gretz in his draft year and are now using the Gretz comps for Gaudreau that's fair. If you were then that's pretty hypocritical. I wish him all the best as I'd like to see a competitive BOA again.

I didn't even know those comparisons were made with RNH to be honest, so I know I didn't

I only noticed the Gretzky one with Gaudreau because of who it came from. I usually don't pay any attention when I hear players compared to a guy like Gretz, Lemieux, Orr... etc. It's just too lofty of an expectation that gets attached to it.

Honestly I think Steve Sullivan may be the best comparable, but no one compares guys to a Steve Sullivan

If he goes on to have a Steve Sullivan type career that's a massive win in my books. Can't ask for much more from a 4th round pick.

I would be pleased too. My point was prospects always get compared to elite players, not the very good ones.

From what I have seen of him he is as good as Drouin for skill so Sullivan I think he will beat. He is pretty elusive as well. Just comparing him to Gretzky makes me cringe. And he will rack up a lot of points 4on4 and PP Imo.

People are comparing him to Gretzky, not Mario Lemieux.

What about a handicapped version of Gretzky?

Anybody with half a brain understands what annalists or anyone else means when comparing players. Anyone who takes offense or gets their panties in a knot over a comparison is not worth responding to. Go talk Tonka toys or something instead with other children and let mature adults carry on with theirs.
Flames are excited to have a dynamic entertaining player signed and adding more skill to the lineup. Not every team has the luxury of drafting multiple #1 picks year after year. This will be only the first time in Calgary Flames history drafting in the top 5.
Maybe he will be a bust or maybe a Star or an average player at best. Does that mean a fan base are not allowed to be excited for a heavily skilled prospect.

I think he is closer to Nathan Gerbe than Wayne Gretzky and any kind of comparison.

If you think he's like Nathan Gerbe, I have to question if you've ever watched him play.

By signing and, more importantly, playing one game this season, they're burning off one year of their ELCs.

Exactly right.

If people were referencing Lemieux, they'd have noted he was being compared to the 3rd or 4th greatest player ever.

Instead, they correctly pointed out that Gaudreau's style was was being compared to the greatest ever - Gretzky.
