Ovechkin

It's in my opinion it's best for both sides to part ways. The Caps will not win a cup as currently constructed. Ovechkin could likely bring in a massive haul to rebuild their team. what contenders would offer the winning package for OV?

Montreal? Galchenyuk/Eller/Fucale/1sts

Colorado? Mackinnon+

Anaheim? Ottawa 1st/Gibson/Palmeri ??

Personally I wouldn't want Ovechkin on my team.

Massively talented no doubt, but I feel like it would be utterly impossible to win with him.

He wants to score goals and that is it. His complete lack of anything resembling defence almost offsets his prodigious offence production.

I don't think he's the franchise but put him with Duchene and Landeskog for instance and that team would be amazing.

At what cost though?

OP says Mackinnon +

Would rather have Mackinnon on that ELC than Ovi at 9.5 for the next 7 years

To the Caps, a ton.

To the rest of the league, not so much...

He means way more to the franchise then his trade value would suggest.

And yet for all his goal scoring prowess it seems like consecutive coaches prefer him on the bench late in games more than anything else

But that's ok we can ignore this:

Because he scores a lot of goals and his stick is too hot for him to hold

Too much for any team to even consider this.

don't think you'd get any of those, maybe the Anaheim one but even that's doubtful

I can really tell you've watched the Caps and know all about them.

That might be the greatest gif I've ever seen.

As for any potential deal for him, I don't see how anything could make sense for the Caps or the team inquiring. Arguably the most dynamic talent in the league, but it comes at the cost of poor defensive play. Add an inflated contract and the KHL chatter, and what team could possibly part with the assets the Caps would be asking for?

Tbh the montreal deal looks doable. Galchenyuk doesn't look like an elite talent. More of a average first liner at best. Fucale is still a prospect. The first is like high first. And eller hasn't shown he can produce like a top 6 player

2/3 Ovechkin for 17 years or one whole Ovechkin for 7 years?

I'd rather keep MacKinnon+. It's extremely unlikely that MacKinnon is ever as good as prime Ovie, but Washington has already used up a lot of prime Ovie. MacKinnon's best days are ahead. Plus, Ovie needs to be elite for that contract to work. If he slows down at all, it'll destroy the cap structure.

I'd trade Kane + but what I'm willing to give up won't be enough for Caps' fans. Ovi is a great player but he has a big cap hit and I'm not sold you can win with him.

He'd get absolutely crucified by the fans/media in a Canadian market.

It would have to be a US team, in all likelihood a non-traditional hockey market. I'm thinking Phoenix or another team struggling to get butts every 18 inches. I know Caps fans think they'd get some franchise-altering haul for him but I think they're delusional. You're asking a team to take on a one-dimensional player with a massive cap hit. I don't see any team offering more than one top 6 forward OR top pairing D man + early round pick and/or AHL prospect. I don't see any team offering numerous NHL roster players and a bunch of early round picks for the privilege of having a guy who just scores goals (usually on the man advantage) and costs 10 mil a year with that amount of years left on the deal. Nobody is going to gut their franchise to become what the Caps are now.
