Dion Phaneuf

What would be his value?
I know that he is not as bad as other Leaf fans may make him seem, but not as good as other Leafs fan make him out to be in their proposals. What do you guys think his overall value would be from an unbiased viewpoint?
EDIT: Non-Leaf fans, please comment.

zero chance he's moved.

I was all about trading him at the deadline while his value was high and getting a lesser number 2 D as well as a blue chip D prospect but most Leafs fans seemed to think he was the second coming of Christ. Never been a huge fan of Phaneuf, and his value is super low now on that contract.

He's a good #2 Guy, he's about 1M/1.25M overpaid IMO. I'd take him on the Sens if he was between 5M and 5.5M. Too bad the most I'd offer is Stone/Puempel+Wiercioch+2nd but with both players (Stone/Wiercioch) playing so well recently, I still wouldn't be sure about the deal. I think the price would be even higher for the Sens too.

I would have taken him on Ottawa but our budget is too low.

As a habs fan it's tough to say this but Dion is actually a really great player. Solid top pairing guy, although a little overpaid.

I honestly think the situation makes him worse than he actually is, if he wasn't forced to be a 1Dman, and a captain he would probably thrive but instead he seems like he's always trying to do too much. Honestly I hate him but he's one of those guys you hate but would want on your team for sure (although maybe not with that contract)

Phaneuf had the highest quality of competition and least amount of offensive zone starts of all defencemen. His parter is also Gunnarsson, who may be solid, but is not an ideal top pairing defenceman.

He was set up to fail this season.

Well it depends when we are valuing him. Pre Olympics the overwhelming percentage of leaf-nation was hailing him for Norris consideration. Post Olympics the overwhelming majority of leaf-nation was calling him a useless plug.

Actually, I shouldn't say leaf-nation on general. Mostly leaf-nation on HFboards flip flop like that seemingly weekly. There's a world of difference between your average level headed hockey fan and the type of mentality this site seems to attract

Sure he's a bit overpayed (if he was a UFA he woulda probably gotten 7.5mil for 7 years but sure lets say he's overpayed), but a top 2D in his prime signed for another 7 years is going to fetch alot of offers, no matter how rough of a few games he had. Don't really see anyone giving Dion enough value to make the leafs trade him besides Florida and Edmonton.

I don't think there would be any shortage of interested GMs. I really wish the Leafs would dangle him. He'd probably benefit from a fresh start, and probably he has counterparts in similar dog houses around the league who might freshen up the Leafs D. Time for a change.

EDM 1st and Gagner for TOR 1st, Phaneuf, Clarkson (50%)

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Perron-?-Yakupov
Hendricks-Gordon-Clarkson
Gazdic-Lander-Arcobello
Joensuu Acton

Phaneuf-?
Marincin-Petry
Ference- J. Schultz
Klefbom

Scrivens
Fasth

$13.6M capspace... I would flip TOR's pick for either the C or D... sign the other player needed in FA

JvR-Bozak-Kessel
Kadri-Gagner-Lupul
Leivo-Holland-Brown
Orr-McClement-Ashton
McLaren D'Amigo

Gleason-?
Gunnarsson-Gardiner
Rielly-Franson
Granberg

Bernier
Reimer/Other

$11M capspace using rough salaries I plugged in... could see Boyle signing a 2 year/$5.5M pact in TML to finish out his career close to home... gives the defense a veteran stopgap... Leafs other wise look to bottom out in 2015 and get a top ten pick in that deep draft... in any case they get a top 3 pick this year to nab a Bennett Draisatl Ekblad Reinhart and start the retool one summer earlier

That gets you Gagner. If by 20% you mean 80% retained.

His value is a lot higher if Leafs retain about 1M in salary or take back an overpaid contract as part of the return.

Phaneuf is overpaid, it hurts his trade value. Not quite as bad as Campbells trade value was hurt, since the cap is expected to be much higher during Phaneufs contract, but its still a somewhat comparable situation.

Would not even do it if that was allowed to be 100% retained...

Why would a team about to embark on a rebuild trade their 1st round pick for an older, extremely overpaid defenseman?

Canucks are sellers. Not buyers.

Leafs have zero use for Gagner, and would never retain 50% on Clarkson... 10-15% would be the only realistic possibility! and even then May still not want to trade him for whatever reasons (new coach and system incoming)

Leafs could find a way better deal if they're holding 2 million off Dions contract for the next 7 years.

He can be an effective 2 guy, but the issue is he's got one of the biggest salaries for a Dman in the league. That makes him very hard to trade.

The other issue is, for all his faults, he's the best defeceman the Leafs have. If they get rid of him, who's going to play Phaneuf's minutes?

He is a soon to be $7m per season player, whose front office does not consider him to be a leader.
There will be some teams badly needing defense, who will jump in the bidding out of desperation if the Leafs retain salary.

However, I disagree that there would be a ton of GMs interested. That is a lot of salary, to tie up in someone who will play a support role.
