What is the Solution to Our PP Woes?

I have some questions regarding our PP.

1) Should Streit be on the #1 unit and Timonen on the #2?

2) Should Simmonds and Hartnell be on the same unit?

3) Is our lack of PP success more a case of the Rangers PK being great or the Flyers PP being awful?

4) Should we consider changing our PP strategy (i.e. not using the 1-2-2)?

Someone...anyone...what's are the answers?

1) Yes. Our PP is designed to get pucks to the net and beat the other team to rebounds. Timonen hasn't been firing the puck as much as he used to, this year. I don't know if it's other teams adjusting and blocking shots, or if he's just not making the right decisions. Either way, Streit is a better shot and has looked much sharper on the point.

2) I don't have a problem with Hartnell being on the unit if he's playing properly - hunting rebounds, opening lanes by standing in the slot, whatever, but, he hasn't. He's not going to score 37 goals again and I think it's time for a change. Maybe try Couts there some time next year?

3) Both - we were really sloppy today, but the Rangers are also playing us really well. We need to be better though, especially entering the zone.

4) Personally, I wouldn't. We've been using the same PP plan for about what, 3 years now? And it's been pretty good for us. It's not like we're loaded with talent and can throw out 5 guys that can all move the puck like all stars. We're limited to what works with the guys we have. It's simple, but simple works.

Taking Kimmo and Hartnell off the 1st PP unit is probably the biggest thing for me. Those two haven't really done anything.

The power play is very stale. It really needs more creativity and skill. Hartnell and timonen need to be replaced. I don't think the players are on the roster to replace them. I don't think streit is creative enough, he just had a really hard shot. Maybe ghost can be that guy next season, but I don't see this team giving a rookie #1 power play time.

Kimmo was just god awful today.

Also SHOOT the puck more. They pass continually until they give it away by mistake.

They were so off. Even messing up simple passes into the zone. Just brutal.

A few things:

- SHOOT! Just get pucks on net and guys in the slot for rebounds.

- I've been saying since they started doing it last season that Hartnell and Simmonds on the same unit is stupid. They're the only two net-front power forwards we have with Downie hurt. Schenn has the PWF body but not play style. Put one of them on the 2nd unit

- Voracek and Giroux on the same unit is redundant. They're both playmakers who can shoot (Voracek poorly). Lecavalier should be on unit #1 bombing cross-ice 1-t's into the net. Voracek should be running the 2nd PP unit like Giroux does for #1...just flipped because he's a LH shot.

- MacDonald on a PP unit is an absolute abortion of an idea. If you're going to play Gill, I'd rather Gill get PP time and plant his big ass in front of the net. But this thread is for long-term fixes and I don't see Gill getting many/any more games as a Flyer. But get A-Mac the hell off the PP. Put Raffl, Couts, or a healthy Downie out there.

Unit 1 has:
Giroux - playmaker (can shoot)
Voracek - playmaker (can shoot)
Hartnell - power forward (can shoot)
Simmonds - power forward (iffy shooter, usually not in the position to shoot, garbage goal scorer)
Timonen - playmaker/offensive dman(can shoot)

Unit 2 has:
Lecavalier - sniper (can pass)
Schenn - unknown role (sometimes can do everything, many times nothing)
Read - sniper (can pass)
MacDonald - defensive dman
Streit - sniper/offensive dman (can pass)

Unit 1 should be:
Giroux - playmaker/QB
Lecavalier - shooter
Simmonds - garbage scorer
Timonen
Raffl/Couturier - two decent skaters who can help Kimmo defend and guys who could benefit from #1 PP time to find their 5v5 offense

Unit 2 should be*:
Voracek - playmaker/QB
Hartnell - net front
Read - shooter
Streit
Schenn - Side of the net guy like Simmonds/Briere

*this is assuming we never see Steve Downie in a Flyers jersey again. Otherwise I'd use him on the PP as a net front guy.

edit: To answer your direct questions:
1. No I wouldn't swap Timonen and Streit
2. Answered above --- huge pet peeve of mine on this team
3. Rangers know how to beat us in every facet of the game...it's more the Rangers imo. But our PP not getting pucks on net and our 2nd unit being abysmal all season doesn't help.
4. I don't think so. I like the umbrella set up the way we run it. When it's on...it's ON. Outside of the Rangers and Devils, teams struggle to defend it. I just question the personnel usage

I'd say our pp is pretty good considering we are playing a top pk

MacDonald is so bad on the PP except that it was his smart backhand play that led to our only PPG today.

I actually think fast passing and quick decisions. That's how we got the last goal. That's why the pens beat them. Have to make quick decisions. Don't even have to be the best ones as long as it's not a turnover

Exactly. That is the only way to beat a PK like the Rangers. The problem is guys like G and Kimmo like to wait and be patient instead of making quick decisions.

I would also like to see G stay out for the second unit at times. Ovie/Crosby/Malkin/Stamkos/Tavares etc are all used like this for their teams...I never understood why G cant be.

I can't figure out if the people saying that in this thread are being sarcastic. The most focused-on theme of this series has been NY's shot blocking. It's like the people screaming shoot forgot that the blocking of shots exists. "Wind up and let 'er rip boys! At least you're forcing the guy with the big stick to stop it!"

I think swapping Streit for Timonen is the most obvious move at this point. I think that's the only move where you could upgrade by a good margin.

We put Gill in front of Lundqvist as a screen in place of hartnell. (similar to what Chicago did with John Scott and Boston does with Chara)
Simmonds moves around behind the net a little more and comes in when shots actually happen.

If you're Berube, what do you do? Do you stay the course and hope the current units can figure it out? Do you shake up the units? Is there something you'd do that I'm not mentioning?

Maybe we can stick Mason in front of the net. His gear is pretty big and he'd be pretty useful for screening the goalie. Also, his paddle could easily deflect shots. Only problem is no one can get them through on net.
