2014 Mock Drafts

I figured we could have a thread for HFBoard user's mock drafts as well as post other more credible sites mock drafts. You don't have to provide for the entire NHL as the spots after 14 are not decided yet but I thought it would be fun to have a collective of our own user's thoughts as well as the outsider's thoughts.

So first off, I have the Bleacher Reports first "Post-Lottery" mock draft (source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...nd-projections)

They have for the top 5, Leon Draisaitl being picked before Sam Bennett and Bennett falling down to Calgary in 4th.. I thought that interesting; as for their order.

Quote:
1. Florida - Aaron Ekblad
2. Buffalo - Sam Reinhart
3. Edmonton - Leon Draisaitl
4. Calgary - Sam Bennett
5. NYI - Nikolaj Ehlers
6. Vancouver - Michael Dal Colle
7. Carolina - William Nylander

Ditto to this. Add Callahan and Kevin Hayes and I am a happy camper.

Aaron Ekblad

Sam Bennett -

most complete player in the draft. IMO he can take over a game consistently more then any forward in this draft class. Can score goals, plays 200ft and has the vision to be a #1 center in the league. My opinion is will make a seamless transition into the pro's and maybe have an impact quicker then the rest as he already has the skating, pace to his game, hockey IQ and defensive game to make an impact. He would be my #1 pick in the draft. I wouldn't rule out Florida taking him if the elect to pass on Ekblad.

Leon Draisaitl

Sam Reinhart

* Michael Dal Colle

Our pick is pretty interesting as I could see us going with either Bennett, Reinhart or even Ekblad but I do think he will be off the board.

I think Draisaitl is #2 on Edmonton's board behind Ekblad. If Ekblad is gone, I could see them going with LD's size if they perceive the difference between one of the Sam's and LD to be otherwise minimal. Considering I think that Murray will go Bennett, my top-5 right now is:

1) Florida - Aaron Ekblad
2) Buffalo - Sam Bennett
3) Edmonton - Leon Draisaitl
4) Calgary - Sam Reinhart
5) NY Islanders - Michael Dal Colle

I lean towards Reinhart and it sounds most scouts lean that way. But every comment I hear from Murray, in addition to the kind of players Nolan has said he envisions on his team, it really sounds like Bennett is their pick.

I'll be happy with either. I also wonder, ever so slightly, if they are more confident than they'd ever say that they'll be just as bad next year and wind up in the top 2 to get a 2nd elite center.

If I had to just pick one elite center and it had to be Bennett or Reinhart, I'd pick Reinhart. If I was knew I was going to also get a McDavid, Eichel or Barzal next year, I'd take the win at all costs guy in Bennett this year. Not sure if that logic makes sense, but whatever.

It's going to be interesting though. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tim Murray is poking/prodding the teams around Buffalo to find out their choices; if Edmonton is set on Draisaitl and the remaining Sam is going to fall past #3, do you offer the Islanders something to sway them into this year's pick so you can trade up?

If Miller signs with St. Louis we could potentially have another pick to trade up with as well but as it looks he wants to test free agency and now it looks like our only hope is St. Louis making it to the conference finals.

Florida - Ekblad
Buffalo - Reinhart
Edmonton - Draisaitl
Calgary - Bennett
NYI/*Buffalo - Dal Colle

Although, if we get the Isles pick, I would love to see Tim Murray try to make a move for Bennett too.

Florida- Bennett
Edmonton*- Ekblad
Buffalo*- Reinhart
Calgary- Dal Colle
NYI- Draisaitl

Florida takes a forward and looks to next year which is deeper in defense.
Edmonton trades up because Buffalo makes it seem Calgary is ready to pony up or that we want Ekblad.
Buffalo, we trade down one spot to gain something to help us in the future.
Calgary takes the big bodied center it needs and Burke likes Em big.
NYI keep their pick because little D is the exact 2c, they need. Tavares, little d, and Nielson down the middle is a scary thought.

I think Florida may take Bennett instead of Ekblad, and that NYI keeps their pick.

1. Fla - Ekblad
2. Buf - Reinhart
3. Edm - Draisaitl
4. Cal - Bennett
5. NYI - Dal Colle

or

1. Fla - Bennett
2. Buf - Reinhart
3. Edm - Ekblad
4. Cal - Draisaitl
5. NYI - Dal Colle

1. - D Aaron Ekblad
2. - C/W Sam Reinhart **
3. - C/W Sam Bennett
4. - LW Michael Dal Colle
5. (via NYI) - LW Leon Draisaitl
6. - LW Nick Ritchie
7. - LW Nikolaj Ehlers
8. - LW Jake Virtanen
9. - RW Kasperi Kapanen
10. (Via OTT) - LW Brendan Perlini

** Sabres select Sam Reinhart only if NYI do not defer pick to 2015, allowing BUF to select a more physical forward in Draisaitl or Dal Colle depending on availability at #5. If NYI defers pick to 2015, Sabres select the slightly more robust Bennett over Reinhart at #2.

I just don't want Bennett over Reinhart. His high PIMs should be a detraction, not any type of benefit. I always would wonder why people thought the 40 goal/100 pim club aka the Brendan Shanahan club was anything to be proud of. I would rather have a tenacious guy with low PIMs like RoR, not an undisciplined player.

So what Bennet has Pims, they dont call half penalties in the playoffs anyway

Fla - Ekblad
Buf - Bennett
Edm - Reinhart
Cal - Draisaitl
Buf - Dal Colle

Eichel, Bennett, Larsson down the middle of the Cup

Ya, cause having a guy with those kind of stats would be an awful thing for a contending team eh?
