not the best cast of characters? That's on par with basically any bottom feeder team... and guess what, the Canucks right now are a bottom feeder team!
Henrik is the only mainstay in that group. Kesler is likely gone by the start of the season, if not earlier. Richardson has one more year left on his deal and he's a 4th liner... good utility guy, but not a guy who steals jobs from others, nor one that would present any more of a challenge for a young player trying to find a spot then what any other team would have. Dalpe, Welsh and Santorelli are FA. Matthias looks much more comfortable on the wing then he does at center. Horvat is likely back in junior since he can't be sent to the minors, and Gaunce is more likely to start his pro career in the AHL then NHL. And Lain could be a serviceable 4th liner, but likley also in the AHL next season.
That's a pretty bad group of centers overall with as much, if not more, question marks then pretty much any team in the league. And we're not talking about potential or what could be - we're looking at what it is right now, and right now the Canucks center depth is about as bad as it gets in the league. You could point to any team and come up with a list of players that could possibly fill roles, but reality is that this team's center depth is bad enough that we should be near the top of any centers' list that is looking for a chance to establish themselves.
with a healthy Kesler that`s actually pretty good center depth.. definitely not in the discussion for worst in the NHL.. the problem is on the wings and has been for a long long time. if Kesler gets traded you have a case.
While you're here, what are your feelings on how the series has played out, thus far? Disappointed? Surprised? Expected?
And how have our prospects looked in the series?
Well, disappointed to say the least.
Game 1: Was a close game, both teams got their chances. Honestly a game Erie should have won, but they were unable to resist the surges of Guelph after Erie took the lead. Ultimately unable to tie it up late after a "questionable" tripping call on Fox. Neither Fox nor Gaunce had very good games, and Fox got a misconduct arguing the tripping call. (It was a BS call with 2 minutes to play, but he should have just went to the box).
Game 2: Erie dominated the first period, but with Dansk is net for who knows why (there has been speculation Williams was dealing with a minor injury) the Otters found themselves down 3-0 despite outshooting them like 16-8. Pretty much all downhill from there, Erie never found a way back into the game. This was an absolutely terrible game for Fox, Gaunce was decent.
Game 3: Start to finish Erie was just awful. I thought they'd come out with some spirit, being down 2-0 and needing a win, but this was the worst game of the series by far.
Honestly was expecting the sweep Tuesday night for game 4 but I went anyways considering it was likely their last game of the season. Game 4 was by far their best game of the series. Played a calm game, solid defense and puck possession, goalie Devin Williams was on his game. Great games from Fox and Gaunce.
I think there is a small chance Erie comes back but it's not much. Guelph will likely finish things tonight but you never know. I honestly won't be upset if it ends, Guelph is a great team. It's just disappointing it took an 0-3 hole for Erie to play like they can.
Not sure where to post this.... was researching the 2015 draft class. Looking at this kid Oliver Kylington from Farjestad, should the canucks target him? Where is he projected to go? Top 5? Top10? He's very impressive with his puck skills and overall demeanor. If we did draft another forward this year, should we target a top pairing guy like him? Or someone like Barzal to replace Henrik as a top playmaker on his team? I dont think we are in the discussion for mcD or Eichel.
Still liking Gaunce's game. He does indeed tend to glide a little but he does a good job of breaking up plays defensively and facilitates the transition out of his zone. Think I've only seen him on for 2 or 3 ES shot attempts against so far in the game which is nice. Made two nice setups to an open teammate but wasn't able to finish them.
