McCarthy to Canucks for draft pick - confirmed!

According to MOJO radio (out of Vancouver) and I think it is on the TSN web-site now too...the Chicago Blackhawks traded defenceman Steve McCarthy to the Vancouver Canucks for a 3rd round draft pick in 2007.

Thoughts and comments??

This must be a move to free up room for Seabrooke - yes?

Apparently the Hawks have signed Todd Simpson so who knows what is goin on. But that isn't official yet.

Hawks also signed Barker.

Hawks fans:

What do you think of McCarthy?
We plan on using him on the 3rd pairing and probably the 2nd power play unit.
I've seen him play a few times and liked his offensive talent, but he seemed a little soft in his own zone. Is that a fair assessment?

Pretty fair. Hope he finds his game closer to home.

Hawks probably feeling a crunch of similar talent players on defense and moved the one with the most value compared to upside. After all, Hawks have a fairly large amount of potential and depth on defense, just not experience.

McCarthy is an enigma. He hasn't been able to put up any points- people blame his early call up, Sutter, Quintal, and the Easter bunny.

the fact is, despite his vision and wheels he has never scored.

He has turned into a real solid guy in his own zone- with some caveats.

1) He gets run like crazy. I don't why- maybe there is a book on him or something- but he gets drilled a lot.

2) He cannot clear the crease- just doesn't have enough **** in his pants.

*

Steve is a great kid, a hard worker- and a solid, if unspectacular dman. He can handle 18 min/night in my opinion.

Vancouver just ***** chicago- we expect dinner or a beer at least.

I think the hawks won the deal

Stevie never showed that he could out together many good games in a row

simpson is an upgrade

Simpson's an upgrade on what the Hawks need. They're breaking in at least 1, potentially 2 rookie defensemen into the lineup from the look of things, and they can't expect McCarthy to be the stabilizing force on any pairing. Simpson's more of what they need.
Canucks on the other hand wanted a puck moving dman who's solid in his own zone. It seems like the Canucks have scouted him many times and tried to get him on more than one occasion. A 3rd rounder 2 years away is a good deal for someone with top 2 pairing upside.

Fair deal for both teams I think, nobody really lost.

You can't really say they won it when the Canucks give up a mid-round pick 2 years away. It seems even now, helps both teams out with what they need.

How did the hawks win?

If we would have traded away Kyle Calder for a 3rd pick and then signed XXXX as a UFA how is that a win?

We could have signed Simpson for 600k regardless of what we did with Mac.

Vancouver got an unspectacular NHL starter making under 800k for a late 3rd pick in 2 years.

IE they gave up nothing. And gained a 15-18 minute a night dman.

Agreed on all points. Good for both teams. I hope McCarthy does well in Vancouver.

Im a little disappointed to see Stevie Mac go but Simpson is a better fit on our current roster. Between Aucoin and Spacek and our up and coming prospects in Barker and Seabrook, etc we have enough offensive defenseman.

Nice pickup for the Nucks. I hope he plays up to his potential there. Hes a great skater and became pretty solid in his own end. He should fit in good on Vancouver where they play more of an uptempo game.
