Next Summer

Right it looks like Fergy's plan has failed miserably in so many ways. Marleau, Vinny, Joe, Hossa, Havlat, Naslund, Morrison, and list goes on were all restricted and are locked up with Mutly years deals. So they're isn't going to be anyone young SUPERSTAR talent for free agents next summer. Say if Edmonton signs Ryan Smyth for a year he is a free agent do u think Fegy should try to sign him?

I didn't know they all signed.. I would think the Leafs would get some cheap extensions on Lindros and Allison..

Don't forget about everybody's pal Aki.

Fergy's going to have to clear some cap space for next summer, if he wants to keep Aki in a Leafs uniform.

Aki of couse loves being in the blue and white, and Aki obviously will give Toronto a 'home team discount' b/c the Leafs have stuck with Aki, even though most Leaf fans don't appreciate Aki and ridicule Aki whenever they can.

But if some team dumps a pile of $$ at Aki's doorstep, Aki may say bye-bye.

I'm sure there will still be a free agent or 2 available, and perhaps a trade when people realize that they cant sign players to 6 mil contracts and keep all thier top players.
I would much rather be a buyer than a seller in the next few years

Yes, we can. Espcially the "other GM's will have to clear cap space for Aki" bit.

What's Havlat's status now? I know he was signed to a 1 year deal ( I think ), will he be a UFA next summer? I've heard Redden/Chara definitely are, but nada on Havlat.

If Hossa is now signed to a $6 million deal, what will Havlat be asking for next year?

Money always talks, and there will be players available, and there will be teams capped out.

How many Iginla's did the Flames have on their way to the SCF. How many of St.Louis, Richards, Lecavalier, and Khabi's do the Bolts have now?

Cap space is NEVER a mistake.

FYI Havlat accepted his QO so it is just for this year ..

FWIW .. That still makes players like Samsonov, Havlat, Gagne, Redden, Chara, Jovo Brodeur etc etc.

However . Why is it only next year you are concerned about ??

Mats Sundin is still under contract for 3 more years as our franchise player and when his contract ends and he is turning 37-38 then all the recent Thornton, Hossa, Marleau will be as well ..

Also what about the RFA .. Will Atlanta be able to afford both Kovalchuk and Heatley at 5 mil+ long term ? Both are still unsigned .. What about TB situation .. Martin St. Louis the league MVP remains unsigned and Brad Richards is due next year .. With Vinny's big contract there could be fallout there ..

I think it is short-sightedness to panic because a few players that are not even Leafs property signed multi-year deals with their former teams .. If Allison and Lindros have big years then Toronto will need a bunch of money to resign them alone..

This seems to be the point that people seem to be missing. The Leafs can commit to the players they want too & let go the guys they don't because the majority are on 1 year deals. When you have cap space you have the flexibility to do things.

What plan? The Leafs were in a precarious situation with cap room, and I think he's doen very well to ice a competitive team with such cheap acquisitions. I much prefer this plan to throwing around $4-5 million at guys like Kariya or Gonchar and having no flexability down the road. Personally, I can't see the Leafs contending this year, so why spend the money? I'm content to see them ice a competitive team for the next couple years while we develope from within

I'm anticipating a full on charge from Ferguson to make Nabokov a Leaf next season. But how much is too much? Not overspending when you have no cap space is easy, let's see how Fergy handles a handful of millions to throw at players.

1. Martin Brodeur - $5.39 million
2. Nikolai Khabibulin - $6.75 million
3. Roberto Luongo - $1.9 million (03/04)
4. Miikka Kiprusoff - $2.9 million
5. Jose Theodore - $5.5 million (03/04)
6. Tomas Vokoun - $2.28 million
7. Marty Turco - $3.16 million

*Ed Belfour - $4.56 million
*Evgeni Nabokov - $3.363 million

I think Luongo's contract will give a better idea as to what Nabokov will go for. As of right now, I personally think he's the 4th best goalie in the league, so I could stomach 5 million. Yes, that's probably too much, but with all those crazy GMs on the loose, that's probably what it will take.

If leafs were in a precarious cap position it was because Gm Jr. choose to put them their by not buying out the contracts that were excessive. There are no draft picks in Jr this year that look like up and comers. We need to sign young RFA.
