THIS DATE IN FLYERS' HISTORY: April 27, 1989

The Flyers tied their best-of-seven series against Pittsburgh with a resounding 6-2 home win. Derrick Smith, who provided his usual tenacious forecheck and was named the game's top star, scored twice in the second period. Tim Kerr continued his stellar play in the series with his 14th point and two goals that gave Philly a 2-0 lead. The Flyers then went into Pittsburgh and won Game 7.

This is about what you could hope for with the way the team was playing going back to New York. The forecheck still needs more work but slowly the team is improving and we are starting to work. We need to bring our very best effort out there and leave nothing on the ice. We do that and we will win, will yourself to win like Bobby Clarke did when he was the "don". Tomorrow we get that out of Giroux. You can only keep him down for so long.

I hope so but I think it's just great checking by the rangers. We need to get scoring from the dmen and 2-4 lines and of course jake!

MSE do you think we will know if Laughton is playing based on the practice today? I guess he would be playing with the 4th line guys.

I think he should be playing with simmer and schenn as that line needs to be broken up or shaken up. They were playing horribly yesterday. Put vinny back on the 4th line. He has to be better next year after he rehabs his back.

Hope grossmanns ok but hope Gus gets in there with schenn!

Let's go flyers!

Due to their travel schedule and the late morning start time for practice, the skate today will likely be abbreviated. I don't think there will be much of an indication based on those reasons.

Fast Rags Fwds, start the slowest d man in the NHL over a young pmd. Berubes decisions , if you can believe it, are actually getting worse as this series goes on. Rags Fwds will eat Gill alive.

This organization is going to ruin Ghost, Morin, Alt, Haag , and Gus and will always choose slow , big, and old dmen over young and skilled.

That won't happen. They're not going to separate Giroux and Voracek. They may switch Hartnell and Schenn.

Did Gus sleep with half the team's wives?! Poor kid getting snubbed again.

@billmeltzer: Although Chief won't say he's made decision, Gill practicing w/ Streit means Gill's the guy.
12:39pm - 26 Apr 14

Makes sense though since Gill is replacing a similar style dman in Grossmann.

None of the reporters I follow mentioned Laughton today. I guess he didn't practice with the big team, which is very dissapointing.

Hill looked really good against the canes and they are pretty fast themselves. He didn't get a lot of time in the season but that doesn't mean he would look bad if he did. I like having gill as far as in front presence for mason. They are going to have to get rebounds to score against him.

No one will trade for him. The Flyers probably won't qualify him and he may well go to Europe.

I don't get how we are not breaking up the top two lines. A scramble would be great for a lot if reasons. G needs more effectiveness on his line. Thank god for jake.

I'd like to keep vinny on the 4th. Maybe have schenn play with G and jake. Hartnell raff and simmer or something.

We really need to trade for a true winger this offseason.

I don't understand why the Flyers aren't targeting McDonagh more. His shoulder is clearly not 100%. Much like Pittsburgh did to Timonen before, every time he's on the ice, we should be dumping the puck in his corner and hitting him.

The one time the Flyers did that, it resulted in a goal.

Akeson needs more ice time, Lecavalier needs to go back to the 4th line.

Hartsy - G - Jake
Akeson - Schenn - Simmer
Raffl - Couts - Read
Hall - Vinny - Rinaldo

MSE do you think we will know if Laughton is playing based on the practice today? I guess he would be playing with the 4th line guys.

I think he should be playing with simmer and schenn as that line needs to be broken up or shaken up. They were playing horribly yesterday. Put vinny back on the 4th line. He has to be better next year after he rehabs his back.

Hope grossmanns ok but hope Gus gets in there with schenn!

Let's go flyers!
3 of the Flyers 8 goals have come from d-men. It's the forwards who aren't doing their jobs well enough offensively (Hartnell, Giroux and Vinny are the biggest disappointments so far). Jake leads the team in points and is the only one forward that's come to play every game. I don't think you can ask more from him.

Flyers don't win this series unless Giroux steps it up. It sucks but being the main cog on this team like he has been for three years now, that's just how it works. Of course Vinny was brought in to alleviate some of that pressure but he's been horrible.

I like it, only thing that would make it better is putting Laughton in for Rinaldo but I doubt he gets in any games.

Berube preached it from game 1 but obviously they did not get it done or McD @ 90% health is still too good to capitalize on him....

Eh. A weak shoulder might affect his passing, shot, and board work but it's not going to affect how he thinks the game. He's still playing really strong positionally and making the right plays.

Yea that's the difference to be able to carry the play. It's unlikely that happens in the next three games in all honesty. That's why we need jake plus secondary scoring plus dmen to make up for the bums (other than g) that you listed. But the guys that have done work have gotten us to 2-2 with a backup goalie for one win.

I think schenn needs to be better more than anything as Simmonds and vinny aren't going to great anything on their own for that line.
