Yes, I like this. I don't have to see a bunch of stupid threads about how Jagr should come to Montreal.

How in the world would 5 million not be a discount..... The only UFA even close to scoring to him is Vanek

And people think Vanek will make like 7-8 million per.... Jagr will only get 4 million + bonuses

Wow. I never realized how amazing his career has been.

If this guy can score 50pts next year, he will be 4th all-time behind Gretzky, Messier and Howe.....and he spent 3 years overseas.

For one year of performance? Not really.

The Devils probably won't be cap strapped either, so an extra million isn't a huge deal. Locking Jagr in for another season is a win any way you look at it.

Jagr's GVT was 62nd in the NHL last season and 49th among skaters - higher than players like Andrew Ladd, Milan Lucic, Nicklas Backstrom and Paul Stastny.

He fits well in New Jersey and seems to be honestly enjoying every moment as a Devil...good for both parties.

And I'm happy it got done so quickly so we don't have to endure weeks and weeks of baseless Jagr to Pittsburgh speculation again

Not a discount. Fair value. Still have to pay the bonuses.

You're right, it does matter. Dollar for dollar the Jagr deal will look a lot better.

Most amazing part of that news story (at least to me):

"The 42-year-old is currently practising with the Czech national team ahead of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship..."

This, just after completing a full 82 game NHL schedule...at age 42.

Say what you will, the guy CLEARLY LOVES PLAYING HOCKEY, HE LOVES WHAT HE IS DOING. That's commendable whatever one's profession.

Hopefully, this news signifies Lou is spending the two months of the playoffs getting his own contracts out of the way, both UFAs (Fayne and Carter next, please) and extensions for key players entering their walk years (Schneider; Greene).

I think it's fair market value for Jagr. He's getting a raise over what he was making before, and he's earned it. But it's not like he would have gotten Vanek money as a free agent.

This is going to be the largest contract he'll have received since coming back from the KHL after all. And even for only a one-year deal, there's a fair amount of risk in signing a 42-year-old player, even one as well-conditioned as Jagr.

It's fair money for him, but I don't see how at least doubling his salary counts as a "discount".

Never said he didn't. Just like I never said he wouldn't re-sign with the Devils. I only ever disputed that he'd come back for the same salary as he got this year (which was claimed in an earlier thread).

I'm glad he'll be back for another season in the NHL. I hate seeing him play against the Pens, but he's still fun to watch play in other games

After his last season ending with Boston he looked like to me to be just about done. He had a great year last year which is amazing considering his age. It's a very good signing but you still have to think diminishing returns at his age--though there are the examples of Gordie Howe and Chris Chelios who went even older. The Devils will need a lot more than Jagr to get back into the thick of things though. They have a lot of good young D coming along and Boucher should be a player. They're weak on prospect depth just like my team. I think they have a few hard years ahead of them--hang on to your 1st round picks.

Was hoping to see the Jagr retirement tour hit another city, but really glad he's coming back nonetheless.
