Calgary - San Jose

Been posting a lot of threads lately, I love hearing other people's opinion(s):

Martin Havlat
51st OA (SJ's 2nd)

83rd OA (Pens' 3rd)

- Sharks save a buyout, get 5m to spare for UFA's
- Flames can take on a bad contract, and could use another 2nd for the rebuild.

We won't give up our second. Unless cal threw in their third...

Why wouldn't San Jose just use their buyout and keep the second?

If Plattner cares about saving money, he should do this. Saves $6m to drop 32 SPOTS

Deal isn't indicative of a rebuilding team, more of a penny pinching one.

No way.

The cost of saving 6 mil is not the difference of a 2nd and 3rd.

Would only make sense if Havlat could be flipped at the deadline for different decent. Havlat has been so bad lately no playoff team will want him at the deadline.

I would do this if I were Plattner. $4M to drop 30 spots is a good deal. As a Sharks fan, I wouldn't love this, but I would understand it as long as the team stayed close to the cap.

I rather just keep Havlat for the year. Or use the buyout. No reason to downgrade our pick.

Cost of buyout is actually only 4M.

No deal, plus Havlat would probably rather be bought out.

I highly doubt Havlat waives to go to Calgary.

I actually wonder if he'd waive for a trade at all. He'd get to pick his destination and probably make more money by being bought out.

I don't see a team willing to sign him currently at 2 mil or more but money may not be the motivator for him at this point anyway.

Yeah I shouldn't have said "probably." I do feel like there might be some team who'd give him something in the $2m range. Could even head back to Europe.

Sharks save a buyout and the Flames only move up 32 spots from a pick. Sharks also get 5m to spend on something else. I know you aren't in cap trouble, but that 5m can help for new FA's.

That's cute, thinking we will sign any impact free agents.

We actually need the 5 M in space so that we have some cap room. Most of Boyle's money will be redistributed to our pending RFAs (Demers, Wingels and a lesser amount to Shepard). This is a no brainer business decision. Save 4 million at the expense of changing a 2nd into a 3rd. Yes.

But for a rebuild, it is counter productive. Think DW would try to pry a bottom 6 prospect from you or maybe convince you to use your 3rd instead. More palatable for his rebuilding rhetoric.

Really doesn't matter what Havlat would want unless someone was dumb enough to give him a ntc.

San Jose is an attractive market for FA's.

Our history of free agent signings is rather sparse. Biggest one was overpaying for an aging Blake.

Most of the time, we trade for people and convince them to stay. Cannot remember a single July 1 where we added anything I thought was significant.

I've never understood that imo... I feel like a lot of players would play for the Sharks given the playoff history and the fact that it's in Cali.

Taxes and being far away from family is also another factor.

Not really, considering travel distance and Wilson's unwillingness to dish out the big bucks.
