When the cap hit 90 million no one is really going to care about this contract. Clarkson won't have a 'bounce back year' because anything he does will be better than this season. He's a useful player when healthy, contract sucks but enough whining about it already.

Pretty sure the cap was supposed to be like $80M by now, according to posts like this.

For some reason he was deemed the top free agent last summer. Why? No clue.

TML should start a bidding war with teams that have a compliance buyout and say the best deal for us and he is yours.

TSN overhyped him and Nonis bit. Makes me wonder if all Nonis does is watch Sportscentre to analyze his players. Maybe that's why he still can't tell how **** Franson is on the D aspect of the game.

I used to think things like that, until

edit: lol, didnt see all the Gomez posts before commenting. Although, my point wasnt that Clarkson contract is as bad as Gomez, only that after the Gomez contract got moved, any contract can be moved.

Well there is 4 billion still to come in Canadian TV rights alone. That's guaranteed money and the cap is linked to revenue...... it's just a cold hard fact and all.

Yeah...but who can we get that smashed to pull the trigger? Mind you if we get the Gomez deal, I'm expecting a prospect of Trouba's caliber.

Gomez has actually had a good career. Clarkson is a sub 0.4 career PPG player who is bad defensively. He wishes he was Scott Gomez.

Sounds like a final exam question. How many 20 oz. pints of La Fin Du Monde does it take to move a 7 year contract at 5.25/year?

My point was merely that there is no such thing as a contract that can't be moved.

Wait a season to see if he can even become a 3rd liner, if not, drink the cough medicine. Package him in a deal with Gardiner to a cap floor team for futures

Use the added cap space to sign a #1 center

Kessel and Phanuef are entering their primes, and the Leafs need to win now. No use letting a 5m deadweight drag the roster down just to wait and see.

There is nothing you can do, his contract is so poisonous even if you buy it out, it only provides 1 million in cap relief

When Gomez was traded he was 60-65 point player (over full season), and had a history of 70 point seasons. he had 3-4 seasons where he deserved his contract

Has a career high of 46 points. That was the 1 and only time he was able to crack 40 points. He has never had a season where he deserved his contract

And my point is clarkson doesn't even compare to Gomez, who was still a good player at the time he was traded and didn't really descend to crap until after he went to Montreal.

I think they should just retain 2 million, and trade him. At 5.25 he's untradeable, but at 3.25, I'm sure they could find a taker, and get something half decent in return

By the same thought that the Leafs could find a taker at $3.25m, why wouldn't they just keep him for that amount?

Why?

When he signed the contract, Scott Gomez had 3 very productive seasons... Around 60 points each... THEN he fell off a cliff.

Id kill for Clarkson to have that.

Would do this in a heatbeat, regardless of return

David Clarkson (20% salary retained), Tyler Biggs and Greg McKegg for Johan Franzen

You make it sound as if signing a #1C is a cake walk

Comparing Gomez to Clarkson isn't really fair. After Gomez signed that contract, he produced like a 1st liner (top 90 in the NHL) for three seasons (38th, 79th and 58th). He actually had one productive season for the Habs before falling off a cliff too.

Clarkson on the other hand...
