Two Blues-trades (Canes and Rangers)

Having a boring day at work and thought I would share a couple of trades I thought about last night.

The first proposal will probably not be doable from Carolina's point of view seeing as they would loose their 1-2 punch down the middle, but on the other hand I'm not too familiar about the Canes depth chart so perhaps they could survive a blow like this?

But anyway, please add some insight about how far off I am in my thinking.

So here it goes:

First deal

To the Blues

Erik Staal
Jordan Staal

To the Canes

Patrik Berglund
TJ Oshie
Ty Rattie
Stl 1st round '14

My thinking is that the Staal's would only accept to lift their NTC if they get dealt together, and Berglund could work out well as their new #2 Center.

The problem is of course that they now would lack a #1 Center, and I'm not sure if Oshe, Rattie and a 1:st round pick would be enough to ease that blow?

Second deal

To the Blues

Marc Staal

To the Rangers

Kevin Shattenkirk

(You could add something small on either side to make it work I guess, but I believe they are pretty close in value)

My thinking here is that Shattenkirk is from New York and as I understand it they seem to be in the hunt for a right-handed offensive defenseman.

And because Shattenkirk is somewhat of a luxery for the Blues (Alex P and J-Bo) I believe that they would be better of in getting a defenseman like Marc on board.

And because I'm not too familiar with the depth charts from the Canes or the Rangers side I will pass on posting their lines after these hypothetical trades are made, but the Blues lines would look something like this:

Offense

J. Schwartz - E. Staal - D. Backes
A. Steen - J. Staal - V. Tarasenko
M. Paajarvi - V. Sobotka - D. Jaskin
C. Porter - M. Lappiere - R. Reaves

Extras: A. Cracknell S. Ott (?)

Defence

M. Staal - A. Pietrangelo
J. Bouwmeester - B. Jackman
I. Cole - R. Polak

Extras: J. Leopold (?) or FA

Goalies

B. Elliott (?) - J. Allen

Sooo...could there be any chance of something like this happening this summer??

i think shattenkirk holds a little more value, maybe a 2nd or 3rd balances it. Also think in the first that the blues give up quite a bit... Don't think it would fit under the cap anyways, could be wrong though.

Not sure about deal 1, except bottom line ? might be what is max these guys -- esp Eric --- command on the open market?
If that approaches top dollar, you're good, if not, prepare to add.

Staal - Shatty is fair, taking into account all variables.
However, idea for NY would be to add Shatty to Staal, or McD.
Not sure what else fits, though, esp if Kreider-McD + of course Hank are off the table.

Rangers could certainly use Shattenkirk, but not at the expense of Staal. We'd want him paired with Staal. Pass.

So you are just being lazy and instead of working you post on HFBoards? For shame... jk, jk. Wish I could do the same at work.

The first deal is probably a no from the Canes. The second deal is pretty close. I think Staal has a higher ceiling, but Shattenkirk brings a much needed skillset to the Rangers. Kind of decimates the Blues' RHD depth though. Not sure if either are realistic, but the second deal is fairly good value.

Blues would want Center Stephan in exchange for Shatty.

No way the Blues would want Jordan Staal's contract that runs till 2023

Now Eric Staal I could see in a Blues uniform this fall but to have Oshie in the deal? No. I'd include Shatty over Oshie but I am not sure if Carolina needs a RHD.

And then the Blues are suddenly over the salary cap with 4 players to sign...

That first deal is just awful.

Edit: I didn't see it was Jordan AND Eric, I just originally seen Jordan

From a Canes' fan perspective, there's just not enough there to justify the gut down the middle that would result from trading the Staals.

Oshie is a serviceable E Staal replacement, and from what I know of Berglund, he's a somewhat serviceable J Staal replacement. BUT, both of those players are downgrades from the Staals. In no way, does Rattie and a 1st make up for the downgrade to the Canes' roster.

I'd imagine the Canes would also ask for Shattenkirk and another youngish fwd with potential on top of the 1st....Just my .02...

Id consider it. Our defense is strong enough defensively that I think we could take the hit to really ramp up offensive production. Outside of McDonagh, every one else is 100% offensively inept.

value is ballpark close, but with all the be-atchin and moanin + groanin about lack of Cs, feel based on supply + demand, small to mod add by Blues is needed.

In other words, it's close enough nice deal in a vacuum, but Rangers might get more for Stepan alone or in a package on the open market.

What adds or alternate packages do you propose to top competition's best offer?

Staal and Shattenkirk would be an AMAZING pair, but I doubt we'll ever see that.

The Blues would not make that deal in the first place. Adding Shattenkirk and a forward with potential? You're out of your mind.

As are you and the OP if you think the original offer is worth trading both Staals.

Nevermind, Stepan's is having his 3rd straight bad Playoffs, 4 points in 12 games this year.

Forget the value... why does Carolina trade their top 2 centers... and not get a center in return?
