Matt Cooke wants 2.5m/year, RFA for 2 years, offers ?
Matt Cooke wants 2.5m/year, RFA for 2 years, offers ?
Cooke's agent just on the radio saying he will not sign under 2.5m/year whatsoever. Cooke is great and clutch and all, but nobody in this city is crazy enough to give a 3rd line checker that kind of money.
Let's clarify this post, so it can be accurate and/or locked.
Lalji: how much do you think Cooke is worth on the UFA market?
Morris then went on to say he thought his client would fetch up to 2.5 million a season. Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2.1, 2.3 and up to 2.5 a year.
Lalji, was quite clear with this when callers stated it the exact way this thread was worded. Cooke is not asking for 2.5 a year in a new deal.

bure94, perhaps you should read my thread again. Matt Cooke's agent did not say Cooke wanted 2.5m this season, his agent said that if Matt Cooke was an unrestricted free agent on an open market, he'd be expecting offers around $2.5m (using Lapointe and Scatchard as examples).
From all accounts, Cooke is looking at between 1.0m and 1.5m for his last two seasons of restricted free agency.
What would be the difference between UFA and RFA status regards to salaries ?
2.5M on the open market is insane still. That just means he's overvaluing his player ! We all have Cooke at 1m, he's probably trying to get 1.5m or more which still makes him overpriced.

LIAR ....
Cookes agent was asked if he was a UFA what would his value be. His agent replied that he would be remiss in his duties if he signed for less than 2.5m ON THE UFA market.
Sounds like Cooke is overvaluing himself in any event (I mean he's 5'8", wears a visor and doesn't fight.)
If I trade find out his price then offer a 3rd if he's willing to take around $1 mill, otherwise the Canucks can let him sit until he comes to his senses.

No kidding, he is making thsi seem like he is a top line player, well I can count a few guys he is behind on the skill-o-meter. (nazzy, bert,mo,sedinsisters, carter to name a few)............
ufa market or not, cooke is NOT getting 2.5... that's retarded... that said, he is a very imoportant part of the nucks, so for their sake i hope they can sign him to a more realistic salary (maybe 1-1.3 or so)... but 2.5 in whatever context currently is pretty damn funny, half of marian hossa...
Sounds like a weak negotiating ploy more than anything else. Cooke will get between 900k and 1.5m, depending on the length of the contract.
I don't know if it's a good one. The Canucks certainly are not going to look cheap by not signing him. If he starts missing time in season that money goes off their cap and there has to be some value in making an example out of a player wanting too much. I bet the NHL has been dying for the chance to tell someone "Because Marek Malik gets a dumbass contract doesn't mean you get one too."

Something's wrong with his agent, no doubt. Cooke isn't in the league of the Lapointe's and Scatchard imo, he's one notch below. I'd be shocked to see my team sign him at more than 1.5M, even if he was a UFA.

I mean it's a negotiating ploy to say such a thing to the media. And yes, it's still a poor, ineffectual one. This was not an accidental slip of the tounge in the interview - this was an intentional statement. There's no way that he's going to sit down at table with Nonis and demand that Cooke get anywhere near 2.5.
Knock off all the personal shots at each other\posters that may or may not be posting in this thread. it's all in the FAQ, folks. I don't want to have to bring out my shiny, imported Chinese instrument again.

Asking Cooke's agent how much money Cooke would be worth as an UFA, is like asking me how beautiful my baby daughter would be as a 25 year old woman...
Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer... and all of a sudden this becomes Cooke wants 2.5m per year... Cooke's agent should have replied "all the tea in China"... and some guys would take this to mean that Cooke wants all the tea in China to sign with the Canucks...
