There's a thread with our top 10 worst trades, but how about our best trades over the last 20 years?
Loved the Rivet for Gorges and 1st round pick (Pacioretty) trade obviously.
The Muller, Schneider and Darby for Turgeon and Malakhov trade was a great one too. I have no clue why we traded Turgeon as we had some serious firepower on that team with Koivu, Recchi, Damphousse, Turgeon etc.
What are some of your favourite trades over the last 20 years?
Of course, we evaluate most of these with the benefit of hindsight now. When you think of it, a lot of these trades were pretty standard or could have turned out to our disavantage big time.
The Kovalev trade was a little bit a of lucky break since apparently the Rangers could choose between Balej and Plekanec. Good trade, but with a fair amount of pure luck.
The Rivet trade also gets over rated a tiny bit because of Patches. Then again, good trade, good thinking (i.e. giving Timmins more picks to work with, not less), but also a little bit of luck, because that pick has yet to achieve his potential at the time of the trade. But it was a 1st round pick, so of course the GM deserves a lot of credit.
In comparison, a lot of our 'meh' trades get that label because the picks involved didn't pan out, which is totally normal anyway. Imagine if the 2nd round pick we got for Gill turned into another Subban. That trade would be up there in everybody's list.
I thought the Samsonov vs Cullimore and another scrub was a good move. Got rid of Samsonov's cap space vs 2 scrubs and if i recall we bought they out immediately. But i guess thats more damage control than an actual trade since Gainey was the one that signed Samsonov in the 1st place.
