Its been real.

But seriously we alllll knew there wasnt going to be a philosophy change with Hex. Just hope he doesnt think 6 d-men you are 6-5 but are slow and cant skate will win games.

Luckily he likes Ghost and Hagg who are not "big".

Poor Gus...lol. No respect...

I think more to the point, you can have a small guy or two, but that can't play small. Timonen would be a guy that would play bigger than his size. Enstrom is skilled, but I think he plays small. If that makes sense?

Not sure what question he was responding to, but there was something similar in Meltzer's blog. Sounds like he just doesn't wanna turn into the Habs.

Hextall's philosophy of team building is not all that different than Holmgren's. Both men believe in building strength down the middle -- with centers being the most important cogs of the forward corps. Hextall is also a believer in having a mix of players who fill different roles on defense. The GM cautioned that the team needs to avoid going "too small" while still trying to bolster speed.

EDIT: Oh yeah, yay more centers.

They have a rather large defense outside of him though:
-Chara 6'9" 255 lbs.
-Hamilton 6'5" 212 lbs.
-McQuaid 6'5" 209 lbs.
-Boychuk 6'2" 225 lbs.
-Meszaros 6'2" 220 lbs.
-Miller 6'2" 210 lbs.
-Siedenberg 6'1" 210 lbs.
-Krug 5'9" 180 lbs.

Krug's a great offensive player but his small stature definitely limits him in other areas of the game. Boston has a good unit there even with all the injuries, if Hextall wants to try to model ours after theirs I have no problem. He's going to have a harder time because no Chara will fall in his lap as a UFA but if he wants to try it through the draft I'm willing to wait.

Reading that blog post and Hextall's comments (didn't hear the press conference) actually kind of irritated me in one respect since a lot of Hextall's proposals or solutions is stuff people on these same boards were proposing or arguing about for years....like valuing the draft and youth and how in the cap world you can't dole out massive contracts to aging veterans and create holes elsewhere. This is precisely the kind of crap we experienced with Holmgren and of course it wasn't until a couple of years ago when they finally admitted their approach was wrong and then preceded the last two drafts to stockpile D men that we turned the page somewhat. But of course Holmgren's tenure was great and he knew best (to some) and that he was not inconsistent/incoherent....

Like I've said ...hopefully now as an org we'll stop spinning our wheels

What? He called for patience with young players. Not a guy who is over 30.

Glen Sather is somewhere in New York with a cigar hanging out of his mouth thinking of how the hell he's going to pawn Nash & his contract on someone else.

He might be but there's no guarantees like it was for Boston when they acquired Chara in free agency. Hextall will need to keep adding to the prospect pipeline to enhance his chances of these guys panning out if he wants a defense like Boston's.

I don't know if it's been reported but Hextall said "there guys locked up that, that maybe don't fit with us? Maybe." I have to imagine he's talking about Vinny.

He also said they were a pretty good team this year (he said the Rangers "didn't beat us", but rather the Flyers lost it themselves) and that they will improve just from the young guys improving. "We'll be better from within". He went on to say that if he can improve the team through a deal though he will (he used the phrase better fit, that is if one player is a better fit then the guy they already have).

I don't know about that, it depends on your definition of big. I think a player over 6'0" & 200 lbs. is what I would consider a good size. If you use that as guideline than most of the best puck movers in league are at least that size or bigger.

I don't know if I would consider Hagg not big neither, he's 6'2" & 210 lbs. while still in the process of adding weight, Luke Schenn's 6'2" 225 lbs. & people consider him big.

Look at the even strength scoring that Curufinwe posted in another thread...
Giroux 49
Voracek 39
Simmonds 36
Read 34
Hartnell 32
BSchenn 32
Couturier 31
Streit 29
Lecavalier 24
Raffl 22

... you have a guy who spent almost the entire season on the top line and and he has 32 ES points playing with Giroux and Voracek. That isn't acceptable. He's put in a position to score. Couturier and Read do all of the heavy lifting and score the same or more than him. That shouldn't happen.

I am excited to see what he does. Hopefully he realized just how important Doughty was to that LA team and he goes out and finds a top D for us.

Out of the top 30 scoring defensemen this year, the only guy under 6 feet was Mark Streit. So Hexy has a point. I don't think he was saying that every guy on the backend needs to be built like Luke Schenn. I think he was just trying to say that there aren't really any "undersized" top d-men.

LA's minor league head coach decided to leave & look for a new job today, apparently looking for an NHL job in coaching. It will be interesting if Hextall makes a play for him here & adds him to the staff.
