Pretty surprised this is happening now, especially after watching Homer's end of the year press conference where he talked about this exact situation.

I'll miss Homer's stoic personality and that look like he could kill you at any moment. But, it is what it is.

All in all this looks like a well prepared transition process.

Homer initiated a major retooling with the Richards and Carter trade, took care of everything when the sky was falling, brought back Hextall to the organization, made sure they drafted some high-end defensive prospects to get everything back on track, at least sort of, and now it's time to move on. This team has a solid young core but probably won't win a cup within the next couple of years, Homer has nothing more to give... it was about time!

It's hard to imagine this team heading toward a new identity with Ed Snider still in charge. This now makes three GMs in a row that he has hired that are former Flyers, and the two previous GMs are still in the organization. One would think Holmgren and Clarke, to a lesser extent, still have some pull, so I predict a similar strategy of preferring grit over finesse.

It's been nearly a decade with Homer at the helm, so having a fresh set of eyes may help the team. At this point, Hextall should be familiar with the Flyers' assets and where they need to improve. I'm curious to see what Hextall does this offseason.

Wow I can't believe Homer was GM for 8 seasons. Time is flying right on by.

I imagine Brayden Schenns contract negotiations starting off with Hextall busting into the room yelling and swinging a goalie stick over his head.

I get that but Homer also pulled off some great trades for the Flyers. The Richards and Carter deals, the Pronger trade, Coburn, Mason, traded for the rights of Kimmo and Hartnell. I can't think of many GMs in the league that have pulled off so many good trades within an 8 yr window like that. He also made some nice UFA signings Emery (the first time), Read, Raffl, Jagr, Gus, Bob etc. He's made plenty of ****** moves too but I'll take the Carcillo, Gagne, Versteeg, JVR and even the Bob trade or the Bryz signing (which I'm still not convinced he wasn't pressures into) if it accompanies the good he's done.

I have no problem with his "promotion" but he did a lot of good things for this organization and was heading in a positive direction. I just don't know what to expect with Hextall, it could be he does really well or it could be he does horribly. But my issue is people are acting like its a sure thing, that he'll be the better GM. Like what if he does make less mistakes but also doesn't do the good things, then what?

Hextall should carry his goalie stick into any contract/trade negotiation.

Hopefully Schenn will **** his pants and sign the 2 mil a yr for 5 yr deal Hextall put on the table.

Cautiously optimistic about the move.

I get what you're saying. Believe me I can see the good Holmgren has done. He is an underrated gm all in all. Obviously Hextall isn't a guarantee to be better. I don't know what to expect either from him.

This is the closest thing I believe we will ever get to a ''fresh perspective'' in the front office.

The only thing I can hope for is a progression toward cohesiveness among the forward core going forward...not 8 billion centers.

Wouldn't change most of the stuff that Holmgren did here. There were a few things that pissed me off, like the Bryzgalov signing, but that was a move by Snider.

Holmgren ran an awesome ship. **** the haters. We're here because he put us here.

I mean, when he took over in 2006, we barely had a legitimate long-term asset to our names outside Richards, Carter, and the recently drafted Giroux.

Richards, Carter, Giroux, Gagne, Pitkanen, Downie plus Forsberg as a trading chip. Plus a boatload of cap space. He did a great job that season, but the situation wasn't quite that dire.

Until Snider gets his nose out the the GM's business, nothing will change with this organization
