Every time they asked Gruden who the team was going to take he would say Johnny Manziel.

There are rumors out there that Lee has a medical red flag for some teams.

I'm not so sure they filled a need. The guy is a project with big bust potential.

Downright scary. I thought he was going to rip open his shirt and reveal a Manziel jersey once he was drafted. EVERY team should've taken him.

Looked up Marcus Smith's draft profile on NFL.com since I've never heard of this dude before.

Quote:
DRAFT ANALYSIS
"Marcus Smith is a pretty exciting edge player. The important thing ultimately is 'can this kid play?' They have Connor Barwin on one side and Trent Cole, who will turn 32 years old, on the other. In that scheme he's a perfect fit. The pick attacks an area of need for the Eagles, and they got some extra picks in the process." -- Mike Mayock

OVERVIEW
Played quarterback as a Georgia prep. Converted to linebacker as a true freshman in 2010 -- saw action in nine games (one start) and recorded three tackles, one tackle for loss and zero sacks. Started at outside linebacker in the season opener against Kentucky before spending the rest of the year as a reserve/special teams player. Moved to defensive end in '11, seeing action in 10 games (five starts) and totaling 12-6.5-5.5 with one pass batted and two forced fumbles. Missed three games with an ankle injury. Took over as the starting left defensive end in '12 and posted 29-7-4 with two passes batted, one interception and two forced fumbles in 13 starts. Caught two-point conversion passes against Kentucky and Missouri State. Was the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Year in '13, starting 13 games and recording 42-18.5-14.5 with three passes batted, four forced fumbles and a blocked kick.

STRENGTHS
Nice bend, balance and body control. Good pass-rush ability and potential. Quick first step. Coordinated hands and feet. Athletic and agile -- can stunt and loop. Flashes a spin move. Shows burst to close and get home. Moves well laterally. Gives effort in pursuit and ranges all over the field. Operated from 2- and 3-point stance. Solid character. Is coachable and has improved steadily.

WEAKNESSES
Lacks ideal length -- plays short-armed and can be locked up by larger blockers. Short initial steps. Still crafting a wider array of counters and pass-rush moves. Still learning to convert speed to power. Work in progress as a run defender. Does not set a hard edge and can do a better job using his hands to disengage quicker. Needs to become a more violent hands fighter. Limited experience playing in reverse.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 3-4

BOTTOM LINE
A high school quarterback turned pass rusher who broke out with 14.5 sacks as a senior (1.12 sacks-per-game average led nation), Smith projects as a pass-rushing, 3-4 right outside linebacker in the pros. Should contribute initially on passing downs and has eventual starter potential as his game becomes more well-rounded.

Yeah I heard that as well. I suppose it may be a bit of a risk, but sometimes those guys pan out ok.

Meh, aside from Watkins and Evans, you can find similar issues with all of the WRs out there. That's a very correctable problem from what I understand.

The Philly.com piece was pretty informative.

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/s...-strategy.html

Roseman basically admitted that they felt obliged to reach a bit after Dee Ford went off the board, knowing that Smith was almost certainly the next DE to go.

It also notes that they were trying to trade up for one of six targets--but found the price to be prohibitive, particularly after the Browns/Bills deal.

Teams that could go with a WR before Eagles pick

Cleveland
Oakland
Jacksonville
Rams
Pittsburgh
Ravens
Jets
49ers(trading up)

If there is a guy they like then they should move up and grab him before someone else does.

A true 34 OLB was most definitely a need. And the #9 pick, Barr, is a "project with big bust potential" too.

I usually am not a fan of ESPN, but I have no beef with their draft coverage. I started watching NFLN, but then I swapped to ESPN and stayed there. I'd prefer Dan Patrick over Chris Berman, but everyone else I liked better on ESPN. I think the draft is the one thing ESPN actually does well. Plus they have that "din-din-din-din-din" when they make the pick...love that.

Even how during every single pick they talked about Manziel? Even when the eagles were choosing (at 22) they were talking the whole entire time about how the Chiefs next pick would choose Manziel. Not one thing about the eagles. Every single pick before it was chosen was Gruden talking about how great johnny football is.

Dont get me wrong. I will still watch ESPN for the draft, but Gruden was crazy last night. Havent seen that obsession during the draft in a long time.

Just curious. Which DL/LB would you have picked at that spot instead of Smith?

Smith has very long arms, Chip likes his guys with long arms, big hands, and tall.

SF traded for Stevie Johnson today. Not that they can't take a receiver, but it is less of a need.

I had him at #60. I would have liked him at #54 and been ecstatic if we had gotten him with one of the 3rds.

Nix, Tuitt, Van Noy, and Ealy for sure. Then after those guys I'd probably put him in the same group as Reilly, Jernigan, and some of the more 2nd-3rd round guys. That's just me though. I'm not like furious or anything with the pick, especially if one of those guys (or Lee or a DB) falls to them in round two, he just would not have been my choice. I would have gone WR or DB, with one of the aforementioned DL/LBs coming in after the WR/DB if none was available.

It was a meh pick in my opinion, I don't really have a feeling either way.

I'm looking forward to see how they fill out the middle rounds, still a lot of talent left on the board.

If you think Nix can stay healthy and keep his weight under control, a good NT would be a nice add to our 3-4. They really wanted a 3-4 OLB pass rush specialist, though, so Tuitt (who would be an end for us) and Jernigan (one-gap 4-3 DT) would have been out.

Ehh I don't think we are missing much there. Nix is just a big guy. He does nothing for me. You can find guys who do what he does later in the draft. Not many NTs are high picks. Tuitt's OK, but he's just a rotation guy at this point. Van Noy to play inside or outside? I don't think he can hold up on the outside in a 3-4 full-time. He's a versatile player, I like his game, but Smith brings a lot more upside. Ealy to play outside or inside? He would get exposed as a stand up guy. Too tight. I read a report the other day teams want him to put on weight and play the three technique. In our system, he would be a project 5-tech. Not exactly something you want in the first round.

I'm neutral on the pick. It threw me off guard when it was made. But then I look back and say, who did they pass on? This draft was odd, usually I cringe when one of my favorite prospects goes off the board. I think the only time I got it was when Barr and Cooks went off the board. After Cooks went off the board, I saw a distinct dropoff as far as guys that would fit the Eagles. This was something I feared going in to it. Unfortunately there weren't too many off the board picks before the Eagles got on the clock. I've been torturing myself listening to radio all day, everyone says they hate it, but no one says who they would have taken at #22 or #26. Everyone just says they should have traded up. It's pretty easy to say that after the fact. If they did trade up I'm sure they would still be *****ing.
