Ryan McDonagh

I feel like he's been just SO much better in these last 3 games. Game 5 he was at his best. Maybe even the old Mac. Did his arm heal or did he play through the pain because of how important the games were? I also thought he was great in game 7 against the Flyers. Thoughts?

I think he's officially back. The last 3 games have been vintage McD.

Yeah he is playing well, a lot better than earlier in the playoffs but I think he still has an extra gear. This break between series could serve to be a refreshing one, hopefully he comes out and is on his game from the jump

Did they say during last night's game that Vigneault challenged him to play better? I think Pierre mentioned it.

Like it was said prior to the Pitt series with regards to Hank, the same rings true for McD, prior to the Conference finals. McD is going to have to step up next round for the Rangers to advance. It's obvious he has another gear or two and he needs to find it for this series.

Still not at 100%, IMO. Still being outplayed by Staal.

Which leads me to the question, why doesn't he do the same thing with Nash? I was rather surprised that AV chose to single out McDonagh ("he's not hurt, he hasn't played very well, he needs to find another level") but nary a word has been said about Nash.

Nash was coddled in Columbus and sadly it seems like he is getting the same treatment here.

As for McDonagh, there's been a definite improvement in the last 3 games but he is still capable of more.

AV is a smart guy maybe he feels he can motivate McD different. Maybe he has, and Nash hasn't responded. Maybe he has more confidence in McD that he can raise the level of his game.

Pierre loves McD, so maybe he did a little more snooping because it's obvious he is not at the pre injury level.

Obviously I know bubkis on a roll about this, just throwing out some logical reasons.

AV did say prior to game 3/4?, that the Pens best players stepped up and now he needs his best to step up. He was talking about Nash. imo. Nash did not respond...

He played much better the last three games, but he's still not 100%. But then again, McD at 75% is still an extraordinary defenseman. He's showing a lot of grit right now.

We can argue about him being 80% or 90%, but it's pretty obvious his shoulder isn't bothering him anymore since it's been a solid week without the piss poor play he was showing the first 1.5 rounds.

My guess is there wasn't any structural damage (like they said) and it was taking a while to heal with 50 games in like 2 weeks or whatever it was. We can only hope that LA/ANA take it to 7 games and everyone gets some well needed rest.

Not 100% for sure. I'm hoping this is an injury that will heal with time but I really worry that as soon as our season ends we will see reports of him going in for surgery. Damn you Burrows!

around 80% to me but with a couple days off and a good game one where he feels confident in it he will make a huge difference. I cant believe this team is the same team that sucked so bad to start the season.
the funny thing is I never thought the rangers would lose to pitt for some reason I felt they would win that series don't know what will happen but think rangers have a good chance to win it all

Personally I thought he still didn't look as good as he did before getting hurt, but he adjusted his play style to his "new" capabilities, which is pretty impressive.

I still don't think he's 100% but he looked much, much, much better in the last 3 games of that series.

I am a ranger fan so take it for what its worth I think he is the best over all dman in the league that is still getting better , he can do it all if he wanted I believe he could make a big upswing in his points maybe 20 + goals and 60+ points but the way he plays he has to be responsible for the other teams best players

I think he started the playoffs at like 50% and is now close to or at 100. He wouldn't be taking the shots that he's taking if that shoulder wasn't healing and feeling reliable.

Agreed. Maybe it was just rust or something. Hopefully these few days off in between series will make a world of difference. We need our top d pairing to be at their best for this one.

Could have been that he was tentative worrying about the shoulder.
Could have been that he was on some pain meds that was throwing him off.
Last four games though, he looks back to normal.
I think he is focused a bit more on the defensive aspect of his game in the playoffs. He has jumped into the play a bit more of late. I suspect we will see more of it in the ECF.

Maybe not having to match up so closely with a superstar like Giroux or Crosby/Malkin will open up Mac's game some. He looked phenomenal in game 5, but regressed a bit the next two, and I think that has to do with how many risks he's willing to take. Don't get me wrong, MTL's dangerous. Pacioretty and Vanek especially will draw the McDonagh assignment, but I don't think they demand the same kind of intense focus that a superstar does.

Great foresight there. 6 points in 2 games. First Rangers D-man in the playoffs since Leetch in 95. So far it's been no contest between him and Subban.
