And our defense isn't exactly terrible either. The guy has been a boss; simple as that.

But this guy is a beast. McD's parents must be really proud of him.

Sather was asked about the McDonagh trade yesterday by Eric Duhatscheck of the Globe and Mail

Quote:
He notably even deflected credit Tuesday for what many consider his finest trade with the Rangers — the 2009 acquisition of defenseman Ryan McDonagh and others from Montreal while shedding the unproductive Scott Gomez and his bloated contract.

"He was certainly the key piece we wanted in the deal. I had never seen him play. That was entirely our scouting staff,” Sather said.

“(Assistant GM) Jeff Gorton had seen him. (Director of player personnel) Gordie Clark. I had no idea other than seeing (McDonagh’s) name on the paper. You don’t give the managers credit for that. It’s the people that work in the field that do those things for us.”

Steve Politi of the Star Ledger spoke to Mike Eaves about Mac Truck

Quote:
"(The Canadiens) certainly weren’t giving up on the player they’re seeing now," longtime Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves said with a laugh over the phone from his office. "Ryan obviously had a gear that nobody knew about, and they were able to develop that on the next level."
Quote:
"We had a nickname for him. It was ‘Shot from a Cannon,’ " Eaves said. "He could be in the offensive zone trying to make a play and the next thing you know, you’d look up and he was chasing down a guy in the defensive zone like he was shot from a cannon. He always had that extra gear."

Eaves figured that speed alone would turn McDonagh into a top-four NHL defenseman for a decade — "a big, strong, stay-at-home defenseman" to use his words. That, as the Canadiens themselves can tell you, is not the player they faced in the Eastern Conference finals.

Barry Melrose, for better or worse, did predict that the Finals would be McDonagh's coming out party that would elevate him to the level of the Doughty's, Chara's and Keith's.

Yeah I heard that, I thought the Olympics would would be when everyone took notice of McD but the team **** the bed the last 2 games. Honestly, thought he was the best defenseman on that team by a wide margin. Yes, I am biased.

Melrose is such a caricature at this point, I wonder when his coming out party is.

I think McDonagh's already there. A national stage might gain him the complete recognition around the league though. And really, the other thing that separates him and the other guys is that his offense has only recently blossomed. If he repeats this performance (or...drool...improves) next season, I definitely think he'll be a lock in the discussion of the top four or five defensemen in the game.

Agreed with all of the above. It blows my mind that people think McD isn't close to Doughty's level, when in reality he's just as good.

Doughty, the Conn Smythe GOAT two-way d-man, has played lockdown defense while putting up 16 points in 21 games.

Ryan McDonagh, the guy who's very good but not elite yet, has played lockdown defense while putting up a measly...13 points in 20 games.

lawl.

It's because he wasn't a Canadian Top-5 pick.

It's 2 wildy contrasting styles though. McD is so much more economical the way he plays, he makes it look easy. Doughty is the more devil may care player but equally as effective. The way Doughty plays, he is a much more flashy catch the eye player. He deserves all the praise he gets. McD will get there praise wise, sooner rather then later.

Doughty has been at the level he is at for longer than McDonagh, which is a big part of it.

A lot of people on the east don't know how good Muzzin is yet, either.

I think McDonagh may struggle this series. Kopitar is the top possession forward he's up against.....

The Olympics were sort of a coming out party, McDonagh was lights out and people took notice but I think by the end of it he was overshadowed by USA's disappointing finish.

Yeah, I had never given him much attention until this playoffs. Muzzin and Martinez aren't big names and I don't watch LA considering they are 4 hours behind me so it's like whoa, those guys aren't 6th and 7th men?

Muzzin plays with Doughty. He's a dangerous offensive weapon and very physical, but he's exploitable defensively. Martinez is basically like a much better John Moore.

I remember thinking that Muzzin absolutely sucked in 2012. I guess he's improved since then.

First D-man with 10 points in the conference finals since 1987...

How do you guys feel about McDonagh being double shifted? I feel like it didn't effect his play for game 1, but I'm worried he's going to be ran into the ground if that's the plan for the rest of the series. Then again do we have a choice? Or can Moore, who's just back from suspension, be trusted to stabilize the third pair enough? Perhaps this only happened because of Diaz and I'm looking too much into it, then again the NBC guys seemed to think this would be a regular occurance. Hmm.

I think between Staal, McD and Girardi we shouldn't have to. It's going to be a long series.
