Look folks ... this is the second year in a row that Heerema came into camp with a REALLY good chance to make the big club and turned in a miserable performance. It's not like Canes management sat down and selected Brendl over Heerema ... Brendl actually had a pretty good showing in the pre season ... they pretty much picked themselves.
Jeff might turn into a pretty good NHLer one day, but he's going to have to figure out how to do it on something other than reputation.
To me that would be the upside in taking Heerema in the waiver draft. MAYBE they could negotiate a little something from the Rangers to return him to New York. That way they wouldn't come out of this deal totally empty.
Plus ... if they couldn't work out a deal, then the Canes are likely to be forced to waive Heerema to return him to Lowell ... at which point the Rags could claim him again ... and at least you've screwed up the Rangers for a week or so by keeping Heerema out of practice.
It's an evil sort of pleasure ... but it'll do :0)
