Players playing in their contract years

Many players in the NHL play superbly well in the final year of their contract, sign a long term deal for $$$ and then slip back into sub-par playing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Datysuk puts up numbers significantly worse than his numbers in 03/04 if he gets the contract he's looking for.

Any example of players like this?

Jaromir Jagr and Owen Nolan come to mind.

Well, Gagne signed a one year deal worth $2 million dollars a few weeks back. He's slated to get big minutes this season with Peter Forsberg; if they play 70 games together, I think Gagne will put up huge numbers. Heck, if they play 60 games together, Gagne will likely set a career high in goals. He's in for a pay day next season.

Edit: Not that I'm saying Gagne is that type of player, but rather he's lucky enough to be in such a situation in a contract year.

Marchant in his last contract with the oilers in 02-03 i believe. hit 60 points, signed the big deal with the bluejackets and fell back into mediocrity

Lots of people signed one year deals. Lots of contract years this year.

Mark Bell,

Excellent strategy by the hawks, hoping he can break out this year into that power forward.

I disagree with the contract year theory. Patrik Elias' production dipped badly in his contract year (2001-2002). The anecdotal evidence supporting the theory exists because of the common fluccuations that all players see in their numbers. The ones who get a spike in their numbers get singled out while no-one notices guys like Jeff Friesen, who had a horrible year in 03-04 (contract year).

Yeah but a guy like owen Nolan is a 20-goal scorer for 3 or 4 seasons, suddenly becomes a 40 + goal scorer, then regresses into a 20 goal scorer again? I'm not saying that every player does that, but many do, especially those that sign big, long term deals. Its all about the money to some players.

After a bad 03/04 season, Ed Jovanovski will be looking to rebound and have a big season, especially with the Olympics this year.

Nolan only scored 40 or more goals twice in his career, but he has scored 29 or more goals seven times. Players are as apt to suddenly have a great year as they are to suddenly have a terrible year. I just don't buy the contract year theory.

this is a question i've been asking about for a while...

seems like the Kings did the JR trade in order to fill an immediate need, but moreso to prepare themselves to sign an impact player next offseason...but who?
