Our Stanley Cup chances are being hindered by an extremely weak captain.

Gionta at the league minimum seems like a raw deal. Someone will give him 3 or 4 million, which of course would be insane.

Well, Gionta is probably better than Pouliot...

I feel bad for whatever team has to endure Gionta at a 4$ cap hit. Wow. At this point all he is doing is taking away development time for young guys who actually could use the ice time. A cap floor rebuilding team could take a look at him. Buffalo maybe.

Who has 3 goals including 1 game-winner? Nope. Gionta is the biggest passenger on this team and has a "C" on his chest. Can't wait until he's gone.

I'm going based on how they play, not their stats. Gionta is better than Pouliot.

We haven't been watching the same '13/14 post-season at all, then. Even in the regular season there's little statistically to point at between them, and Gionta has been worth absolutely nothing beyond his regular season stats in the first place, imo.

I think everyone can agree with me, we don't hate the player, but we hate his role on the team and the fact that we have too many small players.

He's bad offensively
He's a bad captain
but...
He's a good defensive forward

The problem here is that Michel Therrien use him on the 2nd line.

I was swearing every time he had the puck tonight. Can't believe we made him the captain of the Montreal Canadiens. Hopefully it's his last season.

Gionta's not contributing much to the cycle, or the breakout, or the rush. He's not been outright bad, but he's not been good at all.

Agreed. But I'd even say he's a decent captain. Our team is motivated and doesn't quit, he deserves credit for it.

And we ended up losing game 2, so who cares really? He brings nothing offensively.

He's ok defensively but yeah he's horrible offensively..like almost useless

Id have nothing against re-signing him for cheap to play on a 3rd line though, if he sticks to his defensive game n does the job that's alright...but as a top6...nah...im not down...

He was on the 3rd before Vanek start to struggle tho

We all know Vanek will sign somewhere else this summer and a young guy like Andrighetto will maybe take the spot I guess, who knows. Its gonna be another small right winger but its better than nothing.

As a 3rd liner Gionta(4 cheaper) would be ok.

8 goals in 4 games.
For now, only Detroit has less than 2 gpg.
In PO, Anaheim, Minn, Pens, Bolts, Ruins, St-Louis, Flyers and Wings had less than 2.7 gpg.

We are at 2.93 gpg but against the Rags we are at 2.00.

We need to score, it is that simple.

So just to be clear, you're okay with 4 small forwards in DD, Gallagher, Gionta, and Andrighetto composing almost 50% of the top 9?

NHL made the captain position for every team for marketing purposes, it really don't mean no ****

The telltale sign of a small aging forward.
Playoff performers need to be good/great every game.
A Captain MUST be good/great every game.
Gio's smarts have gotten him into some glorious scoring positions but he sure ain't DB once he's there.
One is poison the other's just poisoned...

I agree that Gionta having the "C" means nothing.. it's just for show..

But it doesn't change the fact that he has played like trash these playoffs and needs to go next season. Only way I can fathom him coming back is at a 1.5m/1 yr contract playing only 3rd/4th line minutes. Anything more then that then it's a big mistake. I'd rather reserve those bottom 6 spots for younger, hungrier players like Bournival, White, Weise and Andrighetto.

Leadership can come from players other than the C
Rangers don't even have a Captain.
