He was virtually the only spark of interest on the team post-deadline thanks to injuries and trades.

I don't know if he'll be a good NHLer over the long haul but he has a place on our roster while we find out. He's also a really good asset for the Amerks if it comes to that. I look forward to him going wild in a couple more fights.

I was expecting the 1 year qualifying offer. Couldn't the first year be a two-way contract? Just wondering. Two years is great though. Shows confidence in him.

Same contract that Brian Flynn is on (other than one-way for the 1st year)

$637,500 cap hit. Good enough for me.

Since one way/two way is only about the salary and not about waiver eligibility as far as I know I really do not mind how that contract is structured.

ETA: I need to change that avatar...

Yeah, true. That was probably just Darcy's MO. IIRC Flynn and Adam were two-way, only because they could be.

He has a lot more fire in his belly than most NHL'ers making that kind of money. I wouldn't have been angry with anything under 900k/year.

Nice tidy little deal for Murray here.

May as well punch his ticket onto our 4th line next year.

Good for Nick. Kid is a stud. Wonder if he celebrates by getting a full sleeve on his left arm now too.

SABRES SIGN DESLAURIERS
Quote:
The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed forward Nicolas Deslauriers to a two-year contract.

Deslauriers (61, 230 lbs., 2/22/91) was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings along with Hudson Fasching on March 5, 2014. He made his NHL debut with the Sabres and finished the season by playing 17 of the club's last 20 games.

"Nick was able to step in and compete in every situation we put him in," said Sabres general manager Tim Murray. "We're confident that he will be an important part of our organization going forward."

Prior to being acquired by the Sabres, Deslauriers led the Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Kings, in goals (18) and shots (217). He finished the AHL season with 42 points (19+23) in 65 games in his first professional season as a forward and added two points (1+1) in five playoff games with the Amerks.

Its a one way contract because they dont see sending him down to AHL since he has to clear waivers.

Flynn's contract was 2 way because he still had waiver free movement to Rochester in 13/14 until he hit the game count.

Ellis has a 2 way contract because they expected him to play games in Rochester. Adam would also be a 2 way if they resign him.

I'm a little surprised it was that low. It looks like his salary for 14/15 is the same as 13/14 of $625K then 15/16 is $650K. i thought 14/15 he'd get something like $700K-$750K

So, rules gurus, please confirm if you can:

We could have signed him to a 2-way deal, but it wouldn't have done anything for us, because he would've had to clear waivers anyways?

Thanks.

Basically, if they didn't plan to send him down because of waivers, then the AHL salary wouldn't matter so much. I wonder if offering 1-way instead of 2-way allowed Murray to offer a cheaper salary.

I don't really care about the salary for these next two years, given our cap situation (let's assume we're going to have no trouble reaching the floor), but it's a modest boon in that it gives us a different negotiating baseline in two years if we still want him.

I would presume we might send him down anyways, but I'm sure Terry doesn't mind paying that money.

Correct, a two way deal wouldnt have done anything for us on the waiver front. The only difference is he gets a NHL salary now if he goes to the minors as opposed to an AHL salary. It doesn't really matter other than that.

Maybe the one way deal will discourage waiver claims if the Sabres try to send him down?

maybe. but i really dont see any way he isnt a 3/4 liner all year. as long as he keeps up his compete he ought to be set in stone in the NHL

Teams that claim a player off waivers have to play him in the NHL lest the player re-enter waivers and end up reclaimed by his original team, so I don't think it would make a difference. Really it's just a little security blanket for Deslauriers. In the somewhat unlikely event he gets sent down to the AHL and clears waivers, he gets paid the same. It's not much for the Sabres to give up because A. it's unlikely to happen and B. the money would be no skin off their cap or bottom line. It's likewise not much for him to receive as a contractual benefit, but it's something.

Well, he's gotta find at least a little NHL scoring somewhere in his game before he's set long term. But next year isn't about winning anyways, so if he's a hard worker who helps build the right atmosphere, no worries.

Good contract for a project with size, grit, and a little skill.

I'm interested to see his production next year, he only had one goal last season but he looked so relieved when he finally got it. He had some good looks too, so hopefully he can produce a little more with increased confidence and experience

I really like ND hustle and grit last year. He may not be more then just a 4th line guy for us but he will be a damn good one. If he can chip in 5-10 goals a season with 200+ hits and the same intensity game in and game out then I will be one happy camper. I don't mind the ND for McNabb aspect of the deal, just need Fasching to pan out to be worth the 2 2nds part of it.
