Rumors Picking Up> Joe Thornton/Detroit?(e3) Marleau/Lightning (e2)

The Sharks are circling...or so they say...

A few sources this morning are starting to talk about the possible Sharks moves out there...

The Sharks are actively looking to move players and re-shuffle the deck (when it comes to their veterans) and here is what I have heard so far:

On Marleau...

There is lots of interest in Marleau....the top team I am hearing is the Lightning, but I have also heard the Islanders and the Panthers mentioned...Steve Yzerman is known to be a huge proponent of Patrick and his veteran leadership could be a great fit since it appears, at least for now, that Ryan Callahan will be taking his services to the North.

On Thornton...

This one surprised me, but I know Joe Thornton grew up following both the Leafs and the Wings, but I am hearing the Red Wings may make a play for big Joe. So far, they are the only team I have heard, but we will see...

Watch the Hockeybuzzcast Live at 1pm below, where we will be looking back at one of the games of the year and previewing the Habs and Rangers

It would be really smart to move these two while you can still get a nice haul back. Build around the younger players.

Marleau to NYI makes a bit of sense and something Snow may do to save his job.

Marleau is probably not going anywhere. If you believe his brother/agent, Thornton isn't going anywhere either.

I'd be open to acquiring Thornton, but the Wings would most likely have to dump Weiss on another team first and well... I can't find the line of teams interested in taking on Weiss.

I really doubt Marleau is traded and don't want him to be, but it's more possible with Thornton. I'd want something like Tatar + Ouellet + 1st.

Why would the Lightning want Marleau?

Marleau is a family 1st kind of guy. His wife is from SJ and his kids are in school here. I don't see him waiving. Especially not for NYI. No offense meant to Isles fans. Just doesn't seem like an environment he'd uproot his family for.

It isn't unreasonable to discuss potential shakeups with the Sharks.

A fast forward that can play center or wing, kill penalties, help on the power play, score 30+ goals a year, and play the shutdown role against the opposition's best? Yeah, I don't know why the Lightning would want him either.

If San Jose sends Brad Stuart back to Detroit I'd consider it

(I know the situation with his wife, family, etc etc etc)

So would I but I'm weary of what it'd cost. But Thornton is still a gamer and probably will be for a couple more years. I'm just wondering if he'd cost more or less than Kesler.

Funny how many proposals have that comment or a similar one to explain a head scratching move

There is a reason that both Staple and Friedman reported Snow was unwilling to put his top youngsters on the trade table.

Wang's still paying the bills on LI and there is a reason that Snow told fans after the season, that the isles were sticking with their youth movement: Wang loves those youngsters on cheap contracts.

Isles are not giving up their top youngsters to bring in Marleau, who will be 35 at the start of the new season. Anyone who closesly follows the isles, would realize that the isles are more likely to push for 23 yr old E. kane then 34 yr old Marleau.

No doubt he's a great player but that really isn't the point. Forwards are the strongest link of the Lightning, there's no reason really to acquire a high-end forward like Marleau who'd cost a lot when D is a major need.

That all depends on the return really.
