I'd be open to trading the Tatar + Ouellet + 1st package for Thornton, but I think the Sharks would have to send something else to Detroit alongside Thornton. I know a lot of Wings fans wouldn't like including Ouellet, as he looks like he can become a really steady D-man. But as it stands he is already behind 4, maybe 5 other LHD in Detroit.

You'd have to think that Thornton's days in SJ are numbered after this last debacle. The team wisely (IMO)hung on to the GM and Coach so the only changes that can be made are at the player level. The team needs a major shakeup and Thornton would be the logical candidate to move while he still has good value. Let the younger guys take over the leadership and see if they can get the team to the next level.

Hey it's that thing that the Red Wings don't need at all (a center).

It wasn't that wise to hang on to the coach and GM. I'm sure plenty of teams would do well with them but they've done their fair share of messing things up here.

I love how Eklund doesn't even make up rumours that make sense. Marleau to TB? No point in giving up anything of value for him.

I'd do Tatar + Backman + First for Thornton. If you guys aren't down, it's cool. No biggy.

I disagree especially on the coach. I was hoping you'd fire McLellan so that we could try and hire him.

Not as good of a package, but I'd do it.

DW should have axed. McLellan's fate should have been left up to the new GM.

if the sharks were smart they would look to deal both of them. they are both excellent players right now but their value will only start to decline from here on out. You still have a great young core with Couture, pavelski, burns, vlasic, if you can turn marleau and thornton into 3-4 younger players with elite potential and a few top round draft picks you could bypass a rebuilding stage and go right back to contending for the next decade or more.

I disagree, Backman is at least on the same level as Ouellet. He has more offensive skill and Babcock has said quite a few times that he will be on the Wings next year.

I think Thornton could be convinced to waive his (limited?) no-trade clause to go to Detroit.

I also think the proposed package makes enough sense for the Sharks to maybe do the deal. I just don't see the Sharks dumping Thornton for the hell of it.

Veteran leadership would be my one point of note. If we don't re-sign Cally we need another vet in the top 9 as Malone and Purcell may both be gone. Not saying its Marleau though.

Additionally, simply adding Marleau would make your team better defensively. You have some good young defensive forwards, but Marleau is an elite defensive forward as well as being a great PKer and a consistent 30 goal scorer.

I'm not advocating Marleau to Lighting, but what would Tampa Bay realistically send in return?

Eklund is never right is he?

Anyway tampa thing would take a long look.

Detroit prefer moving ouellet over backman myself big time. I think detroit might have some legs holland has been talking interested in trades.

Babcock would drool over joe.

I think neither will happen but would like joe to detroit and the first trade would do all day.

Whether other teams would hire him is irrelevant to whether or not he should be fired. A coach, regardless of how high of quality, should be fired when the players stop listening to him. The players stopped listening to him. He should have went.

They both should have been sent packing. One due to the fact that this was his team and the other due to the team not listening to him.

Detroit would likely have to include Weiss or Franzen in any possible Thornton deal.

Rumor here is family situation is now in past. (Speculated was a custody issue around stuey's step daughter, wife could not leave the state without bio dad approval. Step daughter is past 18 now, thus the custody battle is over. That is why a window opened in Stuarts NTC).
