Hmmmmm. Mildly surprising he got an ELC given the projected depth in Rochester next year. But, if we've got the contract room to spare, it certainly can't hurt.

I kinda expected them to give him an AHL deal a la Lepkowski, but ehh. Let's see what he can do

I thought this too, as time went by. But early in the year I was thinking it would be 50/50 or 60/40 (can't remember) that they would sign him.

To much of a risk that someone else would pick him up if they didn't offer him an NHL contact. Can't see that Locke has the same leverage if he is done with junior yet the Sabres still hold his rights for another year.

Congratulations to Austin though. Undrafted his first year, 7th rounder the next, to earning an NHL contact.

Do you see them resigning both MacKenzie and Crawford to a Buffalo based contract?

I can see them signing Eric Locke to a Rochester only contract since they have his rights till 1 June 2015 and my understanding he has aged out of the OHL.

Wasn't concerned about giving he or Nelson a contract, but if they were going to give one, I would've preferred Austin. Doesn't hurt to have a big, stay-at-home guy in Rochester or Elmira.

I wonder if being Zadorov's teammate enabled them to get a better look on how his progression has come.

He was always intriguing to me. He's got pro size and if I remember correctly good mobility(unless I'm thinking of someone else). I think he was lacking in the IQ department though.

Nelson has the deadline this week....Locke does not. Locke was drafted in 2013.

I dont see why not signing him. He would replace Szydlowski on the roster.

I was asking about Locke because he's already 20 years old.

SABRES SIGN AUSTIN TO ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACT
Quote:
The Buffalo Sabres today announced that the team has signed defenseman Brady Austin to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Austin (6'3", 234 lbs., 6/16/93), the Sabres’ seventh-round (193rd overall) selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, has been playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) since 2009.

A native of Peterborough, Ontario, Austin spent the 2013-14 season playing with the Belleville Bulls and the London Knights of the OHL, setting career highs in points (33), goals (9) and assists (24) through 67 games played. His career-high plus-51 rating during the 2013-14 regular season ranked sixth among all OHL skaters.

In addition to the Knights and Bulls, Austin also spent two seasons with the Erie Otters during his five-year career in the OHL. He has appeared in 322 career OHL games, registering 110 points (29+81) and 194 penalty minutes.

I agree with you about Locke.

I think Mackenzie is back and Crawford only if they need more Defensive depth for Rochester.

And why do we need/want to replace Sydlowski? Do we need more players who will never be AHL level?

I don't think Nelson gets an ELC.

He's a large man who skates well, so the tool-set is there. He's been good in a more traditional shutdown role and they need that sort too. Yes, Zadorov and Ristolainen provide physical elements, but there isn't anything wrong with bringing a defense-first big man into the fold.

I suspect Crawford is not tendered at this point.

I would've thought Nelson would get a contract before Austin.

You won't find a bad word said of Brady Austin in London. He is beloved. A very high character man. Worked through the simultaneous hardships of mono and his father passing at the end of the season to return for the Memorial Cup. He outplayed Zadorov during those 3 games. In hindsight, many London fans wish Austin donned the 'C' -- an impressive perception given London's dozen returnees consisting of a core that won the 2 previous OHL championships. Won't provide much offensively, but very responsible in the defensive zone. Rarely caught out of position.

Agreed.... Plus you won't find a 235 pounds Dman that moves that well either. He works endlessly in the gym and has a frame ready to play against men.

He's a leader and low maintainence for the coaching staff.

Thanks for the updates. I didn't know about his dad passing.

Interesting, didn't expect that he would get any consideration outside of an AHL-deal but let's see what he can do.

I figured he'd get an ELC because the organization has a dearth of big, stay-at-home defenders. They'll give him plenty of time to marinate on the farm.

I like the signing too. He brings a lot of what we need-size and defensive awareness--now to see if he brings enough of it and the tools to execute at a higher level.

True, and we need bodies in Rochester. Typically 8-9 D come out of Amerks training camp (with the extra 1 eventually going to the ECHL). We are at 9 now - if none of them make the Sabres and all the RFAs are re-signed.

Ristolainen
Pysyk
Ruhwedel
McCabe
Leduc
Bagnall
Austin
MacKenzie
Crawford

If Austin makes the Amerks then Bagnall should be a good influence on him. Another question: will Bagnall be ready to start the season after having shoulder surgery?

Nice to see a 7th-rd pick get an ELC.
