The whole team looked very tired from the Boston series. Markov has a lot of talent but he was relied on way too heavily for his age. He needs a smaller role (18-20 mins top). I wouldn't mind re-signing him if he accepts a contract that reflects this role.
In the end, he was an important piece in a team that reached the ECF by beating the league's best team. He deserve a lot of praise despite his shortcommings in the Rangers series.
What part of his game is good, really good? Is it his shots that are 10 feet wide. His passes that get picked off, or his slow lateral movement or his inability to clear it in our zone. Maybe it's him transitioning and having Price and Tokers bail him out every time he got beat in the playoffs.
So, what part of his game is 'really good'? Did you not see his 4 passes tonight that were picked off? He was BRUTAL tonight and he was very below average all playoffs.
as many assists as Seabrook and Subban these PO, 2 more than Keith, imagine if his passing was any good...
yeah... if MB is foolish enough to think this way (which i don't think he is), Markov will be playing in Detroit next year, lighting it up.
He was misused by a coach who is clueless in how to effectively manage and run his roster. Simple as that.
Well that's kind of a funny statement. You don't think MB is foolish enough, yet you think that the coach is clueless, a coach that is about to get a 3-year contact from MB who you don't think is foolish enough....
Markov is not done, but as many here are saying, he needs second pairing time, like 20 minutes a game.
We could really use a top 2 guy, but they are not easy to find and you have to pay up.
It was reported last year, somewhere, that MB had interest in Edler. Now Edler had a lousy year, but it was under Torts, so his problems could be his own, or due to Torts, see Weise.
IF Edler isn't washed up you have a big two way D-man in his prime on a $5.5M contract for 4-5 more years. Good skater and he can be physical. IF he still has it would be great with PK as I think Edler is more effective when he can focus more on D than being the expected big point generator. Even with his 0ff year though I think the price would be Gorges and Gallagher or Eller. Very high price. MB should still check things out IF his scouts still think Edler has it.
I must say, I wasn't too surprised to come back to this forum and see people ***** about Gionta, or beg for unproven players like Galchenyuk to be handed over spots they don't deserve... but I didn't think people would be so harsh on Markov.
Markov had a great season overall and good playoffs, all things considered. Yeah, he's got a lot of mileage by now but his hockey sense was always through the roof and that has extended his prime years, along with his underrated athleticism.
But yeah, at this point he is either gonna be an average top 2 D (which is not bad in and of itself) or an excellent 3rd defenseman.
People who are talking about all of Markov's "flaws" right now are just selectively basing this on a few counter-performances. Overall this season and in the playoffs, Markov was very much an important player.
I understand why he went to the olympics but obviously, that wasn't a good thing for the Habs either. You combine all those games, all that ice time... I think he didn't have much left by the end.
Markov MUST be a priority re-signing for Bergevin because:
1. Obviously, he's freaking talented
2. He's well-rounded and can take roles in case of emergency. For instance, I don't see him as an elite quarterback anymore but he is that guy I want to replace Subban with if he got injured for a few weeks.
3. His experience is invaluable on this team.
4. Markov has the right attitude. Never one to cause problems internally. Off the ice, never one who held out for too much money. He was always an easy signing for solid value.
5. Just historically. It would be cool if a player we drafted, who gave us very good performances all these years could finish his career with us.
Forget Markov has an elite player. He was once one of the 10 best defensemen in the league but these days are gone. But sometimes people have a hard time reconciling the fact a player can be really good and really useful even if he is not elite anymore.
Next season, Markov would get a chance to reach 800+ games played as a Habs, reach a very select club. The guy is awesome. If the terms are right? Absolutely secure this guy! He's invaluable to this team. And the kind of D any team in the NHL would benefit from. As simple as that.
There may be fingers to point on this team but I'd look elsewhere than Markov.
