Howard Berger: "Leafs-Florida Blockbuster?" (with names!)

Click the text for more garbage.

The deal Ive heard sounds more wild than far-fetched: Maple Leafs would trade Dion Phaneuf, Nazem Kadri and their first-round pick eighth overall to Florida for veteran Ed Jovanovski and the No. 1 overall selection. It would enable Toronto to draft potential franchise blue-liner Aaron Ekblad of the Ontario Hockey League Barrie Colts. Ekblad would ultimately join Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner and Matt Finn to form a young, potentially superb defense unit for the Maple Leafs...

I didn't bother reading his analysis. I just wanted to pass this on for a boring Monday afternoon.

Terrible for the Leafs - so hopefully it's true.

Brutual for the leafs, trade Phaneuf and Kadri to move up 7 spots and take on Jovinoski.

Big no from Toronto.

Phanuef still is a 1b/2a dman
Kadri is a very good 2nd line C
The 8th pick could yield a very good prospect

It's honestly depends if the Leafs believe Ekblad can be a franchise dman. This type of trade can easily be our Rudy Gay trade. Or it can backfire on us, and Ekblad busts.

Well it would certainly set the Leafs back a year or two, and they have a tendency of making deals that blow up in their face.

But I could totally see Nonis making this big splash to land Ekblad.

Unless Ekblad is an immediate difference-maker they'd also have a good shot at McDavid or Eichel the following season.

Bozak - Holland - Bolland down the middle? Jovanovski - Franson as your top D unit? Good luck.

This has got to be, without question, the worst trade proposal I've ever seen. Even the worst HF poster can come up with something better than this.

Poor Berger.

I don't really understand this, Phaneuf is a top pairing guy why would they trade him for a guy who might be a top pairing guy in 3-4 years? Then it's pretty much kadri + 8th for jovanovski...

Yup, they would be in the lottery again.

Great deal for Florida. Add a Top 4 defenceman and Nazem Kadri in exchange for dropping 7 spots in the draft AND getting out from under Ed Jovanovski's deal.

Terrible deal for the Leafs, as there's no guarantee that Ekblad, at his peak, is going to be as good as Phaneuf is now, that's just the nature of defencemen. If Toronto is that desperate for a franchise d-man, they're better off drafting Fleury at #8 and seeing if he develops into one, rather than gambling on Ekblad at the expense of Kadri.

There has to be more moving parts in here...Cause that would be a bad deal for Toronto

It's a big trade but the chance of having Ekblad and Rielly is pretty sexy. I'm sure there would be more to the trade.

Is the difference between fleury and Ekblad really Kadri + Phaneuf + taking on cap?

Definitely don't think so...

Does Berger even have sources any more? I honestly don't think he's gotten a single thing right in years.

If Ekblad turns out to be as good defensively as a Pietrangelo is then its actually worth it.. But hes not.

Obviously the value doesnt work for the leafs... Florida makes out like bandits with Ehlers Kadri and Phaneuf.

Is Fluery a projected #1 Dman? Or is he a #2-#3?

Pretty sure he was the first to conclusively say Shanny was taking over in Toronto

Three years from his draft day where does Ekblad rank among NHL d-men. Is he top 30,20,10.

I hope this is true, that's horrible value for the Leafs.
