Looks like mitch korn is heading to washington:per source close to the situation, it appears Mitch Korn is going to Washington to be Barry Trotz's goaltending coach...

Vokun and Rinne are the 2 big ones I believe.

We still need to give Calle the boot. :/

Hasek is the big one. Of course, one could argue that much of Hasek's success came from his ability to bend in ways humans can't.

Made stellar goal tenders out of Vokoun and Rinne and polished enough turd of Dan Ellis, Chris Mason and Anders Lindback to land them starting jobs in other cities where they promptly flamed out. As a Preds fan I am not thrilled at this news.

Treat him and Trotzy nice for a former northern Virginia boy.

According to Jill Sorenson, Kolzig will be staying with the organization.

Perhaps he can help position players find their floor as well!

I'm fine with Kolzig staying in some capacity. Oates driving away Prior facilitated his too-early promotion.

Wow...interesting....Olie out would be a little sad, given he was following orders.

It's pretty clear that Kolzig was only doing what he was told to do. It wasn't his philosophy, it was clearly OATES' philosophy, so Kolzig isn't going to be doing that. In fact, in the last couple months of the season, Kolzig worked with Holtby to NOT do Oates' goaltending system but instead play a different way. Kolzig will probably go back to being an assistant goalie coach. He was rushed to the head goalie coach position way too soon when Oates idiotically pushed Prior out.

So I wonder, is Korn an upgrade over Prior in the end...?

It remains to be seen, but it's likely a lateral move at worst, given his history. (And that'd be a good thing)

Congratulations, Washington, your goaltending is guaranteed to improve immensely under Korn.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...rs-with-props/

Good read.

Kolzig staying with Caps in some capacity, probably confirming that the changes he made were 100% Oates and management is aware of it. What a disaster Oates was.

Looking at Korn's list of props I'm very encouraged. Some interesting items there and he seems very in tune with concepts of enhanced performance through exposure to specialized extremes.

Quote:
At the website for Korn’s goalie camps — seven four-day summer sessions across the country — is a list of his tools. Most were household items flipped into whatever Korn felt would hone the varying skills demanded by the position. Plywood and a blanket turned into a screen board one foot off the ice, to rocket shots through the sliver of space beneath it. Somehow, they found an “unbreakable mirror” for “feedback…more immediate than video tape.”

There are also mini pucks, a mesh bag called a “focus enhancer,” a blindfold and white pucks that camouflage into the ice. Don’t know how common all of these are among goalie coaches, but if you happen into Kettler Ice Complex one afternoon for practice and see a blindfolded Braden Holtby staring into an unbreakable mirror or snatching pucks the size of Reese’s cups, you’ll know what that’s all about.
Some Jedi training **** going on here.

Wonder who will replace Calle? Hearing he was asked back but family is homesick and wants to leave. Surprised he was asked back myself.

I have no basis for this but he was probably asked back because the players like him and they think he did a good job developing Carlson into an Olympian and bringing along Orlov, Carrick, Wey, and the rest of the revolving door of AHL call-ups we had on D. I imagine Trotz liked his body of work and thought he and Calle could work well together.

People need to stop blaming Kolzig for Holtbys failings. Neuvy, Grubbauer, and to an extent Halak all did great.
