You're right.... Snow should have held out until they added two more "losers" like Vlasic and Pavelski. Losing that 5th rounder is really going to hurt.

Because the isles are building around mostly homegrown talent and have a bunch of young blueliners between their nhl and ahl teams. kids with little nhl experience like De Haan, Reinhart, Pulock, Mayfield, Czuzman(sp) and Pokka. I expect De Haan and Reinhart to stick with the NHL club, while the others head to Bridgeport.

A grizzed vet like Boyle, who can play some 2nd pairing mins and be a mentor would be a welcome pickup.

There are a few reasons, with the most probable being that he understands hockey is a team sport. He probably also recognizes that Boyle is a competitor - former cup winner/historically a playoff performer.

This is not as big of a help as you might think. The Islanders closed on a positive note to end the year while without Tavares, Vanek, and Vis. They were forced to play a more conservative game, and rolled lines more evenly. In their final 20 games they took 12 wins when by all logical approaches they should have lost 12 or more. The issue isn't so much adding a Vanek, it is:

- Improve the GF vs GA ratio
- Play more conservatively because you have a young team
- Get rid of defensively poor players
- Add size to the blueline
- Improve the PP and PK

The first one is the big picture item. If you had a first line of Crosby, Malkin, Tavares and they gave up more points than they scored then their team would suffer because of it. Vanek does precious little to help in that regard. Moulson was worse, way way worse than Vanek, so he was an improvement, but relative to what you need he wasn't an answer, more like a better answer than what we had previously. A good two way forward who can hang with the big boys on line one would be more beneficial than TV. My point? We do not need Thomas, and with the way he gave up in the final two weeks he was here I wouldn't welcome him back at $7 million a year. I'd listen to $5 million, but I doubt he would, so see ya later Tommy boy.

What other RH OFD were available? Ones that wouldn't mind a 2-3 yr deal?

Because he fits the Isles' needs.

-Veteran defenseman (doesn't even have to be a leader, just someone else with experience)
-Right handed defenseman (Hamonic is the only right handed everyday defenseman currently on the roster)
-Can play on the first powerplay unit (Our powerplay was not the same after losing Streit. With Boyle and hopefully Visnovsky on the top powerplay again, we could have a top half powerplay).
-Term is perfect (Isles' top D prospects are 1-3 years away, Boyle goves them time)

How is it a win if Boyle doesn't sign? (I'm assuming Boyle is a FA).

Taking a shot in the dark, but agressively pursuing their (Isles) needs shows they are trying to win. Maybe that helps their rep around the league and on July 1st.

No negotiations between #Islanders and Dan Boyle will take place unless he decides he wants to play there. Decision expected this week.

There appears to be a very slim to no chance Boyle signs with the #Isles. At this stage of career he wants to play for contender. #NHL
I don't blame Snow for trying but it doesn't sound to promising.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet. Andy Strickland has been making conclusions about the Isles for years now, and I've never once seen him correct. In fact, he is really correct about the teams where he has the best sources. For example, he predicted for weeks that the St. Louis Blues would draft Luke Schenn.

Take that with a grain of salt, and wait to see what happens.

Either way, the Isles had extra fourth rounder from Streit and Peter Regin. They're basically not giving up anything that cost them anything here.

We traded that 4th for Halak and we gave up our 5th for Boyle.

Good move by Snow. Boyle would be a great fit in the Isles lineup while the kids mature. A+ for effort. Good to see Snow (Halak + Boyle trade) actually trying to make the on-ice product better rath than going the Oiler route.

We don't have a fifth this year. It was a conditional fifth in 2015, that gets upgraded to a fourth if Boyle signs.

But, that is beside the point. Snow commented the other day that he had extra assets for these sort of deals, basically excess mid-round picks he acquired by moving his rentals.

Strickland just tweeted that slim to none that he signs, but he is taking time this week to speak with memebrs of isles org and those who were part of it.

We could have Toews on the Sharks and he would get the choker label after a year.

Be nice if Snow could pull an Ehrhoff and move Boyle to another team for a 5th rounder back if he really doesn't want to sign.

I'd go back to my original offer of a 7th in 2015 that turns into a 6th if Boyle signs with the Lightning.

To the knuckleheads in this thread. Dan Boyle has a cup. You can't say he is a choke artist.
