Balotelli is the make or break player for Italy.

I think Prandelli has actually done a great job moving Italy away from catenaccio and towards a more dynamic style. I didn't expect them to be fantastic at Euro 2012 because they seemed a team in transition, but they excelled and only lost out to the unbeatable Spain team.

The only thing that will really give Italy a great deal of bother, I think, is pace. If I was Hodgson, I'd be putting my speediest starting XI out there, with a couple of speedy subs for the 70th minute or so.

Despite his talent, I've never been overly impressed with Rooney in the major tournaments and though I would start him, if he doesn't perform against Italy, I'd probably make him a sub for the next match.

Wondering if the abysmal Manaus pitch conditions will slow the game down - which will favor Italy, obviously.

Some great, great group games lined up, I just hope everything goes okay in Brazil, and that the stadiums are ready, etc.

Belgium is who I'm rooting for, Germany is who I think will win. Belgium has a very good all around team and I think they'll surprise some people.

I've heard them and Chile could be dark horses this year.

If Brazil doesn't win Belgium is definitely the team I'm cheering for. Love their team. So much youth, skill and potential. Exactly what I love to see. Don't think they'll go too far though, maybe next time around.

Arturo Vidal is a monster.

I don't like Germany's striker department. Some of Low's choices are a little questionable.

Well, epic start

Really cheering for Croatia, one of my underdog teams along with Chile.

Good work Soccer Canada.
Whatever happened to that kid from Calgary that chose to play for England a couple years back? I can't remember his name right now. Did he make their team?

Owen Hargreaves. 48 international caps for England between 2001-2008. Oft injured, currently out of a playing job.

Sanchez as well..

It will be interesting to see who comes out of that B group.. Obviously Spain but it'll come down to Netherlands or Chile.. I have Spain and Netherlands personally.

He retired. If you want to cheer for a former Edmontonian ( and former teammate ), watch for Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on Bosnia vs Argentina on Sunday!

I don't know man.. I'm predicting they'll finish in the final four. They'd likely have to face Argentina which is a good matchup for them IMO.

I feel totally justified in saying that that goal right there is why I don't watch soccer. What a joke.

You'd never see that kind of flagrant diving in a hockey game.

Oh you definitely see it, but you basically have to commit murder to have a penalty shot called in a playoff game.

I hate soccer with passion but there's nothing else going on Finnish TV's at nights so I'm forced to watch the games, that being said I genuinely feel bad for Croatia, they played great game but the referee **** his pants. Absolutely BS penalty shot call. The right decision would've been a yellow card to the guy who fell on his arse because he got touched.

Oh and I'm rooting for Greece. If they get some sort of money prize, they're able to pay their debts to Finland.

Not to be that guy, but you only have to close your hand on the puck or something:

Go England Go!! To third place in your group. Sigh.

If you go by the book, its a penalty. However, most refs would not call it, and I wouldn't if I was a ref.

Defender did tug on his arm, which in the rule book is a penalty. Brazilian player embellished as well.

I didn't see the game... I just know that the girlfriend and her family back in Brasil are all happy, that's good enough for me. I'm glad I came back before the World Cup though, I hear things are pretty crazy there.

That would be the equivalent of a defender stopping a shot with his hand on the line. Of course that should result in a penalty shot. What happened today is the equivalent to this play resulting in a penalty shot:

How does that make hockey any better? Sure, the game (soccer) is corrupt. We all saw it today before our very eyes. But hockey is no better, or worse. They have like 3 different rule books they play by. Regular season, Playoffs, and Playoffs OT. It's just as ridiculous.

2001? Wow I didn't think it was that long ago. That was the guy I was thinking of.
